Part 4b - The Svarita accent according to ղṇaٲԲī辱 Śṣ

The ղṇaٲԲī辱 Śṣ also admitted that the Svarita (circumflex) accent has eight varieties like

  1. ٲⲹ
  2. abhinihita
  3. ṣa
  4. śṣṭ
  5. ٲⲹṃjԲ,
  6. پDZ峾
  7. 岹ṛtٲ

The ղṇaٲԲī辱 Śṣ is closely connected with the ñⲹ Śṣ and the ī Śṣ regarding the classification of svarita accent. Although the ñⲹ Śṣ and the ղṇaٲԲī辱 Śṣ discussed eight types of circumflex accent but the ī Śṣ mentioned only seven types of circumflex accent[2]. Both the ñⲹ Śṣ and the ղṇaٲԲī辱 Śṣ mentioned ٲٳ屹ⲹ as another type of svarita accent.

ٲⲹ

According to ղṇaٲԲī辱 Śṣ a circumflex with follows a conjunction of consonants ending with y or v and preceded by an unaccented vowel or which has no predecessor, is called ٲⲹ circumflex

ekapade nipūrvastu sayavo ٲⲹ iṣyate|
apūrvvo'pi parastadvaddhānya kanyā svarityapi||

(ղṇaٲԲī辱 Śṣ, 59)

The ñⲹ Śṣ[3] and the ī Śṣ[4] also discussed the ٲⲹ circumflex on the same way.

Abhinihita

According to ղṇaٲԲī辱 Śṣ, when an Գܻٳٲ “a is absorbed by a preceding final ܻٳٲ or ܻٳٲ “o the resulting circumflex is abhinihitaŨ

eo ābhyāmudāttābhyāmakāro nīca eva ca|
lupyate sandhikārye yatra cābhihita viduḥ||

(ղṇaٲԲī辱 Śṣ, 60)

The abhinihita circumflex is also clarified by the ñⲹ Śṣ 14 and the ī Śṣ[5] in the same way.

ṣa

When ܻٳٲi, u becomes respectively ‘y, ‘v before a following dissimilar Գܻٳٲ vowel, the resulting circumflex is ṣa

yavābhyā caiva saṃyuktau tadā ṣa svaro bhavet||

(ղṇaٲԲī辱 Śṣ, 61)

ʰśṣṭ

A svarita accent which is arises from the fusion of two short i is called śṣṭ. It arises from the sandhi[6] for example suci+ iva+abhi+indhatā= sucīvābhīndhatā

ղⲹṃjԲ

ղⲹṃjԲ is another type of circumflex which is mentioned by the ղṇaٲԲī辱 Śṣ

According to this ղṇaٲԲī辱 Śṣ when the circumflexed syllable is separated from the acute by one or more vowels and consonants is called ٲⲹṃjԲ

sa tairovyañjana iti svaro bhavati tadyath||

(ղṇaٲԲī辱 Śṣ, 64)

For example ḍe+Գٱ+󲹱+峾+Ի=ḍeԳٱ󲹱峾𳦲Ի

վDZ峾

The پDZ峾 in one type of circumflex which is only occurs in the 貹岹ṻ text. According to ղṇaٲԲī辱 Śṣ when the acute is parted from its enclitic circumflex not only by the consonants but also by the avagraha or pause is called پDZ峾 circumflex[7].

岹ṛtٲ

岹ṛtٲ is another type of circumflex which arises in the place of a hiatus (viccheda). According to the ղṇaٲԲī辱 Śṣ the example of 岹ṛtٲ is ī18.ճ ñⲹ Śṣ[8] and the ī Śṣ[9] have also mentioned the same definition of the Śṣ 岹ṛtٲ accent.

A svarita accent which is located in the between of two acute is called

udāttādirudāttānto nīco'vagraha eva ca|
tāthābhāvyo bhavetkampastanūnapātre nidarśanam||

(ղṇaٲԲī辱 Śṣ, 68)

On the basis of the above discussion it is clear that the ñⲹ Śṣ, the ī Śṣ and the ղṇaٲԲī辱 Śṣ are closely connected with each other in the point of the svarita accent. Although according to the ñⲹ Śṣ and the ղṇaٲԲī辱 Śṣ the numbers of svarita accent are eight[10] but the ī Śṣ mentioned only seven types of the svarita accent. The ī Śṣ does not mention the ٲٳ屹ⲹ svarita accent. By the comparative study of the different svarita accent of the ñⲹ Śṣ, ī Śṣ and ղṇaٲԲī辱 Śṣ, it is observed that these three Śṣ are mentioned same types of characteristic features of every svarita accent. This survey can be represented with the help of Table 18.
