: Wikisource: A dictionary of Sanskrit grammar

ٳٲ (उदात्त).—The acute accent defined by Pāṇini in the words उचैरुदात्त (ucairܻٳٲ) P.I.2. 29. The word उच्चैः (ܳ) is explained by Patañjali in the words 'आयाम दारुण्यं अणुत स्वस्य इत उचैःकराण शब्दस् (āyāmo ṇy aṇu svasya iti ucaiḥkarāṇi śabdasya)' where आयाम () (गात्रनिग्र (ٰԾ) restriction of the organs), दारुण् (ṇy) (रूक्षत (ūṣa) rudeness) and स्वस्य अणुत (svasya aṇu) (कण्ठस् संवृतत (kaṇṭhasya saṃvṛta) closure of the glottis) are given as specific characteristics of the acute accent. The acute is the prominent accent in a word-a simple word as also a compound word-and when a vowel in a word is possessed of the acute accent, the remaining vowels have the अनुदात्त (anܻٳٲ) or the grave accent. Accent is a property of vowels and consonants do not possess any independent accent. They possess the accent of the adjoining vowel connected with it. Kavyashastra (science of poetry)

: Shodhganga: The Kavyavilasa of Ciranjiva Bhattacarya (kavyashastra)

ٳٲ (उदात्त) refers to one of the 93 ṃk (“figures of speech) mentioned by Cirañjīva Bhaṭṭācārya (fl. 17th century) in his Kāvyavilāsa and is listed as one of the 89 ٳṃk (figure of speech determined by the sense, as opposed to sound).—The figure ܻٳٲ has been admitted first by Bhāmaha (K.A. III/11). Mammaṭa (K.P.X/176) defines ܻٳٲ. According to Mammaṭa and Ruyyaka, the figure ܻٳٲ consists in the delineation of the richness or affluence of a thing or the exalted character of great men.

Cirañjīva defines ܻٳٲ-alaṃkāra as follows—ܻٳٲmṛddhiścarita ślāghya cānyopalakṣaṇam.—The definition given by Jayadeva in his Candrāloka is almost the same (C. L. V/115). According to Cirañjīva when the richness or affluence of things or the exalted character of a person is described by the pretext of delineation of another thing, it is the figure ܻٳٲ. So here we find two types of ܻٳٲ which have been admitted by Mammaṭa, Ruyyaka etc.

Example of the ܻٳٲ-alaṃkāra:

āgārṅgaṇadehalīmaṇimahaḥśreṇīsamutsāritasvāntardvāntakule dviپmahilālīlāvilāsasthale |
gauḍaśrīyaśavantanakaṇikāsampātasampādite no jānantyupayāntamastamudaya bhāsvantamanta sthi ||

“The inmates who reside in the palace in which the darkness is dispelled completely by the rays of jewels set in the lower part of the wooden frame of the door the courtyard; which is the place of amorous sports of the ṣaٰⲹ women and where the munificence of Yaśavanta, the wealth of Gauḍa is accomplished, do not know the blazing sun which undergo rise and setting.

Notes: Here the affluence of jewel of the king’s palace is described. So it is the example of first type of the figure ܻٳٲ.

: Shodhganga: Bhismacaritam a critical study

ٳٲ (उदात्त, “exalted) refers to one of the various Alaṅkāras (‘figures of speech) classified as Artha (‘sense), as employed in the Bhīṣmacarita (Bhishma Charitra) which is a 屹ⲹ (‘epic poem) written by Hari Narayan Dikshit.—The poet has skilfully used ܻٳٲ-ṅk in the poem Bhīṣmacarita. For instance, in I.14 the poet has exalted the status of our country by describing it growing plenty of grains and fruits; and where the light of knowledge is always shining. It is really a wonderful description of India. The other examples are I.12, I.13, I.15, I.16, I.17, etc.
