Gitashastra (science of music)
: Shodhganga: Kohala in the Sanskrit textual tradition (gita)Svarita (स्वरित) refers to one of the four types of Svaras (“accents), according to the ܳīⲹśṣā—one of the works ascribed to Kohala—a celebrated authority of the ancient period along with others such as Bharata, Yāṣṭika, Śārdūla, Kāśyapa etc.—Kohala, though a contemporary of Bharata is believed to be one of the pioneering 峦ⲹ of the śī tradition. He was not just an Ācārya but was also an accomplished actor himself. [...] ܳīⲹśṣ defines the different qualities (dṛḍhatā, mṛdutā, sthaulyam, etc.) associated with the four svaras (accents) namely ܻٳٲ, anܻٳٲ, svarita and pracaya.
Subsequently, the names of the ‘seven varieties of the svarita-svaras and their definitions are given.
- Nitya;
- ṣa;
- Abhinihata;
- ʰśṣṭ;
- ʰپٲ;
- 岹ṛtٲ;
- ղDZⲹñᲹԲ;
It is interesting to note that these varieties of svarita are also found in Nāradīyā Śikṣ. However, there are some minor differences.
Gitashastra (गीतशास्त्र, īٲśٰ) refers to the ancient Indian science of Music (gita or samgita), which is traditionally divided in Vocal music, Instrumental music and Dance (under the jurisdiction of music). The different elements and technical terms are explained in a wide range of (often Sanskrit) literature.
