Kohala in the Sanskrit textual tradition (Study)

This page relates ‘Kohala and Gita (5): The concept of Tana� of the thesis dealing with Kohala’s contribution to the Sanskrit textual tradition of ancient Indian performing arts. The study focuses specifically on music (Gita), dance (Nritya), and drama (Natya). Although Kohala’s original works have not been found, numerous references to him across Lakshana-Granthas (treatises) and works by modern scholars indicate his significance.

Kohala and Gītā (5): The concept of Tāna
तं � द्विधा षाडवमौडव� � तानं विदुर्दत्तिलकोहलाद्याः �

Govinda īṣiٲ mentions that there are two varieties of (śܻ) Բ, viz. ṣāḍ and ḍa. He says that a Բ in which one note (svara) is omitted is called ṣāḍ Բ and that where two notes are omitted is called an ḍa Բ. This description is also found in the ṅgīٲٲ첹.
Śṅg𱹲 �
‘T śܻ (standard) ū, by dropping one or two notes become śܻ-Բ (specific combinational note series)�[1].
Govinda īṣiٲ calculates the śܻ Բ in the following manner. In the ṣaḍj-峾, the omission of either ṣaḍj, ṛṣ, 貹ñ or Ծṣād will give rise to seven ṣāḍ Բ each. This would make a total of (7x4=28) twenty eight ṣāḍ Բ for each ū. In the case of omission of 貹ñ & ṣaḍj, Ի & Ծṣād or ṛṣ & dhaivata would give rise to seven ḍa Բ for each ū. This would sum up to (7x3=21) twenty one ḍa Բ. In all, he arrives at (28+21=49) forty nine śܻ Բ for the ṣaḍj 峾. In a similar manner, by omitting ṣaḍj, Ի and ṛṣ in the ū of the madhyama 峾, seven varieties each of ṣāḍ tanas are arrived at. This would add up to (7x3=21) twenty one varieties of ṣāḍ Բ. And finally, by omitting ṛṣ & dhaivata or ṣaḍj & Ի seven each of the varieties of ḍa Բ are obtained. That would mean there are (7x2=14) fourteen ḍa Բ in all, for the ⲹ-峾. In this manner a grand total of (28+21+21+14=84) eighty four śܻ Բ has been arrived at by Govinda īṣiٲ.
This delineation of the number of ṣāḍ and ḍa Բ also, like many other subjects in ṅgīٲܻ, follows ṅgīٲٲ첹 to a great extent. However, in this case, there are two differences. Firstly Śṅg𱹲 prescribes the omission of ṛṣ and 貹ñ (and not ṛṣ and dhaivata) for ḍa Բ of the ṣaḍj-峾, and secondly, he prescribes the omission of Ի and Ծṣād (and not ṣaḍj and Ի) for ḍa Բ of the madhyama-峾. It is interesting to note that the term �ḵ� that is found in ṅgīٲٲ첹 has at the time of ṅgīٲܻ is transformed into �ḍa�.&Բ;
As mentioned above, ṅgīٲܻ appears to be a work that followed ṅgīٲٲ첹 to such an extent that many portions herein seem to be paraphrases from Śṅg𱹲. In such a case, the citing Kohala’s name in this context, and the source material of Kohala that Govinda īṣiٲ would have used for the same, appear to be of doubtful authenticity.
