Jyotisha (astronomy and astrology)
: Journal of South Asian Intellectual History: Samarasi峁僪a and the Early Transmission of T膩jika AstrologyWork refers to one the 鈥渢hirty-two astrological lots鈥� (sahamas), as discussed in the fourth chapter of the 碍补谤尘补辫谤补办腻艣补鈥攐ne of the earliest preserved Sanskrit works on Perso-Arabic (T膩jika) astrology authored by Samarasi峁僪a in the 13th century.鈥擳he so-called lots (Sanskrit: sahamas; Arabic: sahm, translating 魏位峥喯佄肯�) are derived by measuring the longitudinal distance between two predefined points in a horoscope (typically two planets) and projecting it from a third point (typically the ascendant degree). Of these 32 lots [e.g., Work], all but two are present in what has become the most widespread list of T膩jika sahamas, compiled some three centuries later by N墨laka峁囜弓ha and comprising 50 items.
Jyotisha (啶溹啶啶むた啶�, 箩测辞迟颈峁 or jyotish) refers to 鈥榓stronomy鈥� or 鈥淰edic astrology鈥� and represents the fifth of the six Vedangas (additional sciences to be studied along with the Vedas). Jyotisha concerns itself with the study and prediction of the movements of celestial bodies, in order to calculate the auspicious time for rituals and ceremonies.
