Historical Elements in the Matsya Purana

This page relates ‘Ancient Depictions of the Puranas� of the study on the historical elements of the Matsya-purana: one of the eighteen Mahapuranas which are Sanskrit texts that have preserved the cultural heritage, philosophy, religion, geography, etc of ancient India. This Matsyapurana was originally written in 20,000 verses and deals with topics such as architecture, ancient history, polity, religion and philosophy.

Ancient Depictions of the ʳܰṇa
There are two views about the ʳܰṇa seen in ancient times. In one sense it was used as a discipline in the history of ancient circles. In another sense, it is available for a specific literature or book. To finds its antiquity, it is necessary to observe Vedic ٱٳܰ�ṇa, ṃh and 貹Ծṣa .
The use of the word �ʳܰṇa � in the ṻ岹 is available in many mantras (RV-3/54/9, 3/58/6, 10/130/6). But at these sites the word �ʳܰṇa � is only indicative of antiquity. Elsewhere (RV-9/99/4) the word �ʳܰṇa � is used as an adjective of the word �ٳ �.
In the Atharvaveda we find the word �ʳܰṇa � used with the words پ-ٳ and śṃsī , where it is available only as a specific discipline�
�sa ṛhī diśamanuvyacalat ||
ٲپś ܰṇa� ca gāthāśca
nārāśaṃsīścānuvyacalan || �[1]
According to the ṻ岹 and Atharvaveda , some of the chandas and ʳܰṇa had appeared in same time (�11/7/4).
Āṇy첹
Āṇy첹s and 貹Ծṣa are the last part of ṇa. Even in this part of Śܳپ , the status of ʳܰṇa and history proves to be adequate–in the form of history ʳܰṇa is available to us in the developed form i.e. from its earlier position in the ṇa.
�ⲹñ첹ṇe�
yad brāhmaṇānātihāsān ܰṇān kalpān gāthā nārāśaṃsīrmedāhutayo devānāmabhavana |
tābhi� kṣudha� pāṇmānamapādhnan | apahata pāpmāno � � lokamāyān | ṇa� ⲹṛṣ 'gacchan || �[2]
貹Ծṣa
There are also many references about �ʳܰṇa � in the 貹Ծṣa . We get many examples for using the word �ʳܰṇa � from the Bṛhadāraṇyaka 貹Ծṣa, Chāndogya 貹Ծṣa . The word �ʳܰṇa � is important as fifth Veda–�itihāsa ܰṇa� pañcamo � 岹�� in the Chāndogya 貹Ծṣa .
The other examples are as follows�
�sa yayādrendhanāgnejneravyāhitāt pṛthagdhumā viniścaranti , eva� vā are 'sya mahato bhūtasya niḥśvasitametad yadagveho yajurvedo 峾岹 'tharvāṅgirasa itihāsapurāṇam | �[3]
�ṛg岹� bhagavo 'dhyemi ⲹܰ岹� 峾岹mātharvaṇaṃcaturthamitihāsa� ܰṇa� pañcamam , � 岹� , 辱ٰⲹ� ś� ....�[4]
ūٰ Grantha
ūٰ-grantha also described the word �ʳܰṇa � in various places.
�ⲹṛc 'īٱ 貹ⲹ� ܱ asya 辱ṛn upakṣaranti yadyajuṣi ghṛtasya ܱ yatsāmāni � ܱ yadabharvāṅgirasa� sāmasya ܱ� yadvrāhmaṇāni kalpān gāthā nārāśaṃsīritihāsapurāṇānītyamṛtasya� ܱ || �[5]
�tasya prajāpālakasya nṛpateśca vyavahāro vedo dharmaśāstram aṅgāni , upavedā� purāṇam �[6]
ṛt Grantha
There are also many examples of uses of the word �ʳܰṇa � in the ṛt . Such as�
�mīmāṃsate ca yo vedāna ṣaṅbhiraṅgai� savistarai� |
itihāsaܰṇān sa bhaved 岹� �[7]
�ٲٰṣṭśīپ -sāhasrā munayo gṛhamedhina� |
punarāvartino vījabhūtā dharma-pravartakā� || �[8]
�ⲹ śrāvayet pitrye dharmaśāstrāṇi caiva hi |
ākhyātānītihāsāṃśca ܰṇān khilāni ca || �[9]
峾ṇa
The 峾ⲹṇa also mentioned the description of the word �ʳܰṇa ’�
�ityuktvānta� puradvāramājagāma purāṇavit | �[10]
�ityuktvā tu � sūto rājānamidamabravīt |
śruyatā� yat purāvṛta� purāṇeṣu mayā śrutam || �[11]
Ѳٲ
There are not only the general references of the ʳܰṇa in the Ѳٲ but also ʳܰṇa characteristics mentioned in the Ѳٲ .
�ܰṇa� mānavo � sāṅgovedaścikitsitam |
ājñāsiddhāni catvāri , na hantavyāni hetubhi� || �[12]
This verse is a sufficient reflection of the Ѳٲ view of the ʳܰṇa. Fragmentation of the facts of the ʳܰṇa with the help of logic-abuses–is not proper.
This is the approach of Ѳٲ .
�ṣṭ岹ś ܰṇān ṛt satyavatīsuta� |
paścād bhāratamākhyāna� cakretadupabṛṃhitam || �[13]
There is a clear opinion of Ѳٲ that Vedas should be reclaimed through history and ʳܰṇa .
That is why the Vedas scholars always scare the lesser known readers of the Śٰ so that they do not cheat them.
This is the general introduction of the ʳܰṇa . The Ѳٲ makes explicit mention of ܱܰṇa as a specific ʳܰṇa in which the description of ancient kings is specifically specified.
ٳśٰ
ṭiⲹ has given valuable instructions to ʳܰṇa and history at many places of his economical thought, ٳśٰ , which is not less important from historical point of view. 10
ṭiⲹ’s statement describing the form of Veda is that the 峾, Ṛg and ۲� are called Trayee.
This trilogy or Trayee is considered to be under the Atharvaveda and the پ Veda �
�sāmargyajurvedāstrayastrayī atharvavedetihāsavedau ca 岹� | �[15]
ղ첹ṇa
In the ղ첹ṇa there are mention about the ʳܰṇa �
�vākovākyamitihāsa� ܰṇa� vaidyakamityetāvacchaṣdasya Dzṣaⲹ� �[16]
Philosophy
�sa eva mantrabrāhmaṇasya draṣṭāra� pravaktāraśca te khalu itihāsapurāṇasya dharmaśāstrasya ca �[17]
dzپṣa
�digdeśakālāvaraṇādibhedānna ghāḍhakorāhuriti buvanti
yanmānina� kevalagolavidyā tatsaṃhitāvedapurāṇavādyam || �[18]
īپśٰ
�ٲٳٱ� hi gahanatama� satyevita� Բ� |
śrutismṛtipurāṇānā� karma kuryād vicakṣaṇa� || �[19]
ʳܰṇa
ʳܰṇa itself mention and describe about the word �ʳܰṇa �. There are many examples in the several ʳܰṇa.
Such as–According to the Vāyu-ʳܰṇa about the origin of the ʳܰṇa �
�sarvvajñāt sarvvavedeṣu pujitāddīptatejasa� |
ܰṇa� sampravakṣyāmi yadukta� mātariśvā || �[20]
On the other side Matsya ʳܰṇa has mentioned that the ʳܰṇa is as the earliest creation of Veda�
�ܰṇa� sarvaśāstrāṇāṃ ٳ� brahmaṇ� smṛtam
nitya ś岹ⲹ� ṇy� śٲṭiٲ
anantara� ca vakatrebhyo vedāstasya vinisṛtā� || �[21]
The Mārkaṇḍeya ʳܰṇa also has considered the ʳܰṇa as the earlier of Veda �
�ܳٱ貹ԲԲٰⲹ 貹 ṇo 'vyaktajanmana� |
purāṇametad vedāśca mukhebhyo 'nuvini� sṛtā� || �[22]
There are noted about the origin of ʳܰṇa in the Skanda ʳܰṇa �
As per the Padma ʳܰṇa �
�ṛtپ� sarvaśāstrāṇāṃ purāṇasyābhavattadā
kalinā grahaṇa� dṛṣṭvā purāṇasya tadā vibhū� || �[24]
