Meaning of the word ʳܰṇa
Veda is the main source of Indian culture as it reflects every time, every day and everywhere in the Indian Culture entirely.
According to the ѲԳܲṛt�
�śܳپ smṛtyudita� dharmamanutiṣṭhan hi Բ� |
iha kīrtimavāpnoti pretya cānuttama� sukham || 2 /8 �
The Veda helps us to choose the right way that what should be done or should not be done. The Veda is auspicious which blesses us in all the steps of our life. So the Veda is omniscient. But the Vedic thoughts are reflected in the ʳܰṇa . To know about the norm of ancient India and the true color of Indian culture the ʳܰṇa are only the simple and best way. We don’t realize the meaning of the Śܳپ without the ʳܰṇa . As per the Ѳٲ we can say–�ܰṇapūrṇacandreṇa śܳپjyotsnā ś .... | (徱貹 1 /86 )�. No one is considered as a learned without leaning the ʳܰṇa as no one knows the Sanskrit language without learning the ղ첹ṇa ܻܳī .
According to the Padma ʳܰṇa�
�yo vidyāccaturo vedāna sāṅgopaniṣado 屹Ჹ�
na cetܰṇa� saṃvidyānnaiva sa syād vicakṣaṇa� || ṛṣṭi ṇḍ 2 /52 �
The important thing is to know the etymology of word ʳܰṇa –�parati argre gacchatīti ܰ | � The word ʳܰṇa is formed by the word �Pura �. ṇiԾ, 첹 even ʳܰṇa itself have represented the etymology of word �ʳܰṇa �.
According to Yāskācārya, the ʳܰṇa means �ܰ Բ� bhavati � that is old but treated as new (Nirukta 3/19).
According to Ѳṣi ṇiԾ–�ܰ bhavam � that is incident which was happened in the past time.
The word �ʳܰṇa � available in the ṻ岹 in many places and the meaning which is described in ṻ岹 of the word ʳܰṇa is ancient or incident happened in the ancient time.
According to the Vāyuܰṇa –�yasmāt ܰ dyanattkīda� ܰṇa� tena tat smṛtam � (V.P.�1/203) that is the incident which was alive in the past.
According to the Padma ʳܰṇa –�ܰ 貹貹� ṣṭ ܰṇa� tena tat smṛtam � (P.P.�5/2/53) that is one which wishes for the tradition of antiquity is called ʳܰṇa .
Apart from this, there is another different derivation of the word �ʳܰṇa � in the ṇḍ ʳܰṇa –�yasmāt ܰ dyabhūccaitat ܰṇa� tena tat smṛtam � means “it happened in ancient times.� (ṇḍ �1/1/173).
There are also other descriptions of the word �ʳܰṇa � in the various text. Such as, according to Madhusudana Saraswati–�viśvasṛṣṭerپ� ܰṇam� that is “the history of the creation of the world is called ʳܰṇa �
According to Sāyaṇācārya–�jagata� prāgāvasyam anukramya sarga پ岹첹� ⲹ� ٲ� ܰṇam | � (Aitreaya ṇa ṣy ū첹 by Sāyaṇācārya).
The Chāndogya Upaniṣada also described about ʳܰṇa –�پ ܰṇa� 貹ñ� vedānā� vedam � (Ch. U.�7/19).
Ѳṣi ñ첹 also says–�ٳ ܰṇāni setihāsāni śaktita� jayayajña prasiddhārthavidyā� cādhyātmikījagat || � (ñ첹 ṃhٲ �1/10). 5
According to the Gautama Dharmasutra –�tasya ca vyāvahāro vedo dharmaśāstrāṇi aṅgāni upavedā� ܰṇam � (Gautama Dharmasutra �11/21).
The Matsya ʳܰṇa also says–�ܰtanasya kalpasya ܰṇāni vidurvidhā� � (M.P.�53/71).
In the ٳśٰ , ṭiⲹ gave his opinion about the ʳܰṇa . He said�
�mukhyaivagṛhīta� vā Բ� tat priyāśrita� |
پܰṇābhyā� vodhayedarthaśāstravid | �[1]
also says about the ʳܰṇa in the Vs. 1-2 of �岵Ծٰ � as–�............. ٱ徱𱹲� ܰṣa� ܰṇa� �
According to M. Winternitz�
“T word ʳܰṇa means old. The ʳܰṇa therefore, contains the old traditions and histories.� (A History of Indian Literature , P-517 ).
According to Mac Donnell�
“T Ѳٲ somewhat vaguely to express ‘ancient legendary lore� implying didactic as well as narrative matter, and pointing to an old collection of epic stories. One passage of epic describes ʳܰṇa as containing stories of the gods and genealogies of the sages.� (A History of Indian Literature , P-299).
According to Gold ٴdz�
“T ʳܰṇa itself as designating a class of writings, occurs as early as in the law�book of Manu, through this book itself as we have been, may be called recent when compared with the Vedic texts.� (Inspired writings of Hinduism, P-107).
