This page relates ‘Activities of Virahotkanthita� of the study dealing with the Ashta-Nayikas—a classification of eight kinds of “Heroines� representing the eight emotional states (avastha) employed in the classical Indian dance and performing arts (otherwise known as Natya Shastra). These Ashtanayikas reflect the eight types of romantic relationships and have hence formed the expressive subject of many classical painting, poems and dramatic plays.

1 ṅg岹Բ[1] —weary limbs
कान्ते कथंचिद्नदितप्रयाणे क्षण� विनम्र विरहार्दिताङ्गी �
ततस्तमालोक्य कद� गतोऽसीत्यलिङ्ग्य मुग्धा मुदमाससा� �kānte kathaṃcidnaditaprayāṇe kṣaṇa� vinamra virahārditāṅgī |
tatastamālokya kadā gato'īyaliṅgya mugdhā mudada ||[2]When the hero asked her to leave, she bowed low due to the weariness caused by viraha, to her limbs. Yet immediately after a moment, she looked at him and said ‘Now he has come� and embraced him for long.
2 屹ٳ-첹ٳԲ[3] —telling her status
चन्द्रश्चण्डकरायते मृदुगतिर्वातोऽपि वज्रायते माल्यं सूचीकुलायत� मलयजोलेप� स्फुल्लिंगायते �
आलोकस्तिमिरायत� विधिवशात्प्राणोऽपि भारायत� हा हन्त प्रभदावियोगसमय� संहारकालायते �candraścaṇḍakarāyate mṛdugatirvāto'pi vajrāyate mālya� sūcīkulāyate malayajolepa� sphulliṃgāyate |
ālokastimirāyate vidhivaśātprāṇo'pi bhārāyate hā hanta prabhadāviyogasamaya� saṃhārakālāyate ||[4]The moon is throwing fierce rays, even the slow wind has become like thunder, the garland on the neck prickles like a bunch of needles, the sandal paste feels like sparks of fire, by a quirk of fate light is getting dim and dark, even the life has become a dead weight. Oh, alas! the time of separation from the loved one is the time of annihilation.
3 Գ貹[5] —Suffering great heat

I am unable to stay wherever I am. I am unable to lay myself down more than once. Abstaining from food and edibles, even honey is bitter to me. |
Caluvalaite saicadāya jājulentō monalāya Niluparāni mōhamāya niṭṭūrpu laggalamāya |
Anything cool is unthinkable, even jasmines are like thorns. My passion is uncontrollable often leading to heavy sighs. |
Talapu vāni mīdanāya talavākilē ⾱ⲹ Palumāru gadasina muvvagōpāluḍau celuvarāyani pai. |
I am always waiting for him at the threshold with my thoughts constantly lingering on him, the ܱ who is the same as Muvva Gopala whom I have already met a number of times. |
4 Vepathu or kampa -Trembling[7]
शीतभयहर्षरोषस्पर्शजरासम्भव� कम्प� �
Kampa or Vepathu (trembling) occurs due to emotions like coldness, fear, joy, fury, touch, old age etc.
वेपनाद� स्फुरणात� कम्पाद्वेपथु� सम्प्रदर्शयेत् �
vepanād sphuraṇāt kampādvepathu� sampradarśayet ||[9]
Vepathu (Trembling) should be represented by trembling, throbbing and shaking (of the limbs)
5 鲹پṛmṅgṛṣṭi[10]
[i.e., Retracting the limbs which had blossomed because of love]

6 Գܲūٲṛt屹貹
[i.e., Resentment towards recollection of previous incidence[11] ]

Anupallavi Gaḷi gaḷigege ava baruvanendu nōḍi nōḍi daṇidenē ḷa īḻ 岹 sōtu soragi ḷa徱ṅgḷa bahu rātriyu ⾱ŧ |
Having watched the path every second, expecting him I am feeling exhausted. My legs do not support me and I fall down and many nights pass like this. |
Carana Kuhu kuhu kogile kuhuke Sari ⾱ŧ madhu Kuhu kuhu kogile ā sarasa 貹岹 Nenapu muttibare Kahiyāyē ī bāḷu tallaṇi torede anna Բḷa Viharisi Ჹḍa śǰ첹 diruḷoḷu tāḷdu jāra ō Բ Bahanē āva iniyā bahanē pintirugi bahubeḷa beḷage gṛhavennadu |
The cooings of the koel indicate the spring is passing. The cooings of the koel reminds me of the previous union. My life has become bitter and I have forbidden any kind of excitement, food and drinks. I tolerated his falseness, even in the darkest of nights, Will not my lover come back and make my house luminous with happiness? |
7 Tears[12] —bāṣpamokṣa, rudita
पत्य वियुक्ता मलिनैकवेणी सोत्कंठिता गायत� शून्यचित्त� �
शय्यास्थित� दुःखयुता वराकीप्रोक्ता मुनीन्द्रै� सजलाक्षियुक्ता �
patya viyuktā malinaikaveṇ� sotkaṃṭhitā gāyati śūnyacittā |
śayyāsthitā duḥkhayutā varākīproktā munīndrai� sajalākṣiyuktā ||[13]
Separated from husband she is so pale, she plaits her hair into a single braid, she is worried and singing listlessly lying on her bed. She is sorrowful; the poor soul, is called -"one with tears in the eyes'' by sages.
8 ṛt貹[14] —Pangs of separation
屹ḷi[15] Language—Tܲ 岵—Hindustāni Kāpi; ḷa�ū貹첹 |

Pallavi Pāyarāni bāḷicē bhāma nampina rāvu |
When I am in pangs of separation and send my messenger to you. You still do not come! |
Anupallavi Kāyajuni bāriki karigi cintanondi Bigikaugiṭa jērtuvani prītiyēla talapavaladē |
As I am suffering because of Cupid, why don’t you think of taking me in a tight hug? |
䲹ṇa 1 Nāḍēninu kōrina (cina) celiya neṭlu saiturā Ennaḍaina nīmāṭakedurāḍi yuṇṭē Sannutāṅga tirupatipuranivāsa vēṅkaṭēśa. |
Oh! Lord Venkatesa! The glorious bodied! I have always been in love with you and have never argued with you, how can I bear the separation? |
9 Arati[16] —Lack of interest
अरतिस्तु भवेद्द्वेष� हृद्येष्वप� � वस्तुष� �
aratistu bhaveddveṣo hṛdyeṣvapi ca vastuṣu |[17]
One who loses interest in things is said to be in Arati.
रात्रि� कल्पशतायते दिवस� मन्वन्तराब्दायते शीतांशुर्दहनायते मलयजोलेप� स्फुल्लिंगायते �
आहार� गरलायत� किमपरं हारो भुजंगायत� प्रेयस्याः प्रियविप्रयोगसमय� कि� कि� � दुःखायते �rātri� kalpaśatāyate divaso manvantarābdāyate śītāṃśurdahanāyate malayajolepa� sphulliṃgāyate |
āhāro garalāyate kimapara� hāro bhujaṃgāyate preyasyā� priyaviprayogasamaye ki� ki� na duḥkhāyate ||[18]The night becomes hundred million years long, the day turns out to be an era of Manu (i.e. 4.32 million human years) the cool rays of moon seem to burn, the sandal paste feels like sparks of fire, the food tastes like poison, even the necklace seems like a snake around the neck-separated from the dear one what is there which is not painful.
10 ٲś-峾屹ٳ�10 states of love
Bharata enumerates the ten states of love, (峾-ٳ)—He says these are states of love which a hero or a heroine undergoes when there has been no union among them (Ayoga–separation before union). The vast expanse of literature available presents a hint that these could be used for Viprayoga Śṛṅ (separation after union) also.
They are longing to see, anxiety, recollection, enumeration, distresses, raving, madness, love fever, dullness and death.
प्रथमे त्वभिलाष� स्यात् द्वितीये चिन्तन� भवेत� �
अनुस्मृतिस्तृतीये तु चतुर्थ� गुणकीर्तनम् �
उद्वेग� पञ्चमे प्रोक्तो विलापः षष्ठ उच्यते �
उन्माद� सप्तमे ज्ञेयो भवेद्व्याधिस्तथाष्टम� �
नवमे जडता चै� दशमे मरणं भवेत� �
स्त्रीपुंसयोरे� विधिर्लक्षणं � निबोधत �prathame tvabhilāṣa� syāt dvitīye cintana� bhavet |
anuṛtstṛtīye tu caturthe ṇaīٲԲm ||
udvega� pañcame prokto vilāpa� ṣaṣṭha ucyate |
unmāda� saptame jñeyo bhavedstathāṣṭame ||
navame Ჹḍatā caiva daśame maraṇa� bhavet |
strīpuṃsayoreva vidhirlakṣaṇa� ca nibodhata ||[19]
մDZ辱ⲹ gives a similar list of ٳs. Here though the lovers are not married they have undergone kalavu or sambhoga. They are
vēṭkai y-orutalai y-uḷḷuta� melital
Ākkañ ceppa ṉāṇuvarai y-iṟattal
Nōkkuva v- m-avaiyē pōṟal
maṟatta� mayakkañ �-ṉṟ
ciṟappuṭai marapiṉavai kaḷaveṉa moḻipa.[20]amorousness, uninterrupted thinking of the object of love, emaciation, enumeration of what is experienced like sleeplessness, etc, transgressing the bonds of modesty, looking at all objects of nature with reference to the limbs of the object of love, forgetfulness, stupor and the dying state.
This Śǰ첹 by Jayadeva gives all the ten states of love. Here the word by word meaning is expounded as the words of the Śǰ첹 do not explicitly mention the ten states of love but hint at it as an undercurrent.
सा रोमाञ्चत� सीत्करोत� विलपत्युत्कम्पते ताम्यत� ध्यायत्युद्भ्रमत� प्रमीलत� पतत्युद्याति मूर्च्छत्यपि �
एतावत्यतनुज्वर� वरतनुर्जीवेन्� कि� ते रसात� स्वर्वैद्यप्रतिम प्रसीदस� यद� त्यक्त� ऽन्यथा नान्तक� �dzñپ īkaroti vilapatyutkampate 峾ⲹپ dhyāyatyudbhramati īپ patatyܻپ mūrcchatyapi |
etāvatyatanujvare varatanurjīvenna ki� te rat svarvaidyapratima ī岹 yadi tyakto 'nyathā nāntaka� ||[21]
The following is a translation by H. Desiraju which has been quoted:
� = she is;
� dzñپ = hair bristling [tingling sensations—romāncavatī iva ācarati–abhilāśāparatvam—awaiting his arrival with tingling sensations in her body];
� ī karoti = noisily breathing [Գ ṛt kāraṇena niḥśvanam]; vilapati =extolling [ⲹ첹 ṇa ṇa īٲԲ ‘he alone is a great hero, he alone is beautiful...]
� ut kaṃpate = highly thrills [kathamīd ṛṣī viraha m tārayāmi... ‘How can I swim over this wistfulness...’]
� 峾ⲹپ = taking pain
� ⲹپ = meditating [ by these two udvega avastha, ecstasied state, is suggested]
� udbhramati = whirling around [showing places of pleasure talking about them Բ]
� īپ = eyelids are half-closed [state of love-madness madanonmāda avastha]
� patati = falls down [off her own feet -vihvalatvam]
� ܻپ =getting up [ avastha–struggling to raise from a decumbent posture]
� api = furthermore
� ūپ = she is swooning [Ჹḍatva, ٲԲٱ屹ٳ]. Then Krishna may ask “When she swooned and was under a delirious situation, you may call a doctor, not definitely me...� Presuming this escape-question from Krishna, the milkmaid-messenger is continuing her thread;
� hè, svar = heavenly
� vaidya = doctor
� pratipadama = in similarity. [That is, you are the one similar to ś brothers, who are (sic) not just twin gods of medicine, but they also possess most beautiful aspect. So, Krishna, you possess not only a beautiful physique like Ashwin Kumars but you are also the presiding deity to cure the mental illnesses -either that of Radha, or at a later time that of Arjuna,... so you come.]
� 屹پ = this much;
� a + tanu = without, body–bodiless [Lovegod] jvare = in fever [afflicted by that bodiless fellow] [tvam = you]
� yadi = if
� ī岹 = oblige
� vara ٲԳ� = beautiful, bodied [Raadha]
� te rasat = by your, quintessence [of graceful love]
� na jīvet kim = not, going to live, why [why doesn’t she live, she will live by that grace of yours]
� Բⲹٳ = otherwise [ٱٳٲ� = more than you]
� na antaka� = no, [other] murderer [there is no other murderer than you]
�ŧ, ṛṣṇa, is now in a kind of morbid lovesickness. She frissons, sighs, raves, shivers, droops, swings up, goes into delirium with rolling eyes with half-shut eyelids. Next, she gets up, stumbles and swoons. For this kind of sickness, you alone are the godlike doctor. As such, if you come to give a potion of medicine, called your love-grace, she definitely survives. Otherwise, she has to breathe her last...�[22]
11 Viṣayasya paricchitti�
[i.e., Thinking of the limitlessness of the issue[23] ]
हारो जालार्द्रवसन� नलिनीदलान� प्रालेयशीकरमुचस्तुहिनांशुभासः �
hāro jālārdravasana� nalinīdalāni prāleyaśīkaramucastuhināṃśubhāsa� |
yasyendhanāni sarani ca candanāni nirvāṇameṣyati katha� sa manobhavāgni ||[24]Flower garlands, wet clothes, lotus leaves, moons rays which are as cold as snow, cool sandal paste -when they kindle heat, how will the pitiful women in viraha calm down?
12 Dūti sakhyādi visrambha�
[i.e., Taking the messenger friends into confidence[25] ]

䲹ṇam 1 峾n pūṅkaṇamāri tūkunnu śīٲ-karanum ceṅkanalāyi mēvunnu bata 峾Բⲹŧ! Śō첹 naḍuvil ñān kāmam vīṇuḻalunnu kāṅka !malpriyasakhi! 峾Ծ ennoḍuṅṅunnu! Dayayāvaranennaṇayunnu Māmakādhiyennāṛunnu ī māratuyirennu tīrunnu? |
The cupid is raining arrows on me. Even the cool rays of the moon are red hot for me. O friend with beautiful eyes! I am wallowing in the midst of the ocean of love. The night is at an end. When will my love come and embrace me and fulfill my desire? When will this affliction given by the cupid be cured? |
䲹ṇam 2 Dinamoru yugaprāyamāyallō! Kuḷir-tennaliha vairiyāyittīrnnallō ī- Ghanarucirāṅganām kamitāvine ninaccu-taniyē valayunnallō! Tārmadhumoḻiyāḷ�! Kanivu varanu kuṛaññallō! Anya-kāminikkavan vaśamāyallō! Tanuvum ati kṛśamāyallō! Hanta! Dayitaniṅṅanē tōnniyallō! |
A day stretches like an era. Even the cool breeze has become my enemy. I contemplate the dark cloud like form of my lover and become restless, oh girl of honey dipped words. His interest in me is decreasing. He has interest in some one else. I am becoming thin. Alas! How has my lover changed like this? |
䲹ṇam 3 Tāpam mē nī cennu collumō? Kēṭṭu-taruṇanu 첹ṇa vannīḍumō? Vannu- Kōpamayi kaḷaññu kuḷir koṅkakaḷaṇaccu svāpam ceytīḍumō! Sarasa vīrāyitāntē! Rāppakal matiyākumō? Suma-cāpanannu mayi nērkkumō? 貹ⲹ mama īܳō? Jala-jākshanoḍu saha vannīḍāmō! |
Would you go and tell him my anguish? May be he will show some compassion. Will he leave his anger and embrace my bosom and enchant me? Even the day and night is not enough for our amourous sport and he is yet to come. Will not cupid help me? Will my desire be fulfilled before the night ends? Will you bring along my lotus -eyed lord with you to me? |
