Story of Balabhadra
(峾, 峾, Baladeva). The elder brother of Śrī ṛṣṇa and the eighth incarnation of Ѳ屹ṣṇ.*
Birth.
When the number of wicked kings increased Bhūmīdevī (goddess of Earth) turned herself into a cow and took refuge in Ѳ屹ṣṇ. Ѳ屹ṣṇ then promised to be born as the sons of Vasudeva named Balabhadrarāma and Śrī ṛṣṇa and destroy the wicked. Vasudeva was the son of the 岹, ŚūԲ, King of Ѳܰ. To Devaka the brother of another 岹 King, Ugrasena, was born a daughter ٱ𱹲ī. The marriage of ٱ𱹲ī with Vasudeva was celebrated but on the same day an Aśarīriṇ� (a heavenly voice from above) said that the eighth child of ٱ𱹲ī would kill ṃs. Instantly ṃs put both Vasudeva and ٱ𱹲ī in jail. The first six sons born to ٱ𱹲ī were killed the moment they were born by striking them against the ground. ٱ𱹲ī became pregnant for the seventh time. The babe in the womb was Ananta incarnate by վṣṇ’s directive to be of help to him when he would also be born soon as ṛṣṇa. Therefore it was necessary to save the child from the cruel hands of ṃs as it was certain he would kill the babe the same way he had killed all the others before. So he ordered ī to take the child from the womb of ٱ𱹲ī and place it in that of dzṇ�, another wife of Vasudeva. ī did so and the boy got the name Saṃgharṣaṇa, also because of this. The news spread that ٱ𱹲ī aborted. dzṇ� delivered a boy and was named Saṃgharṣaṇa alias Balabhadrarāma. (Daśama Skandha, 岵ٲ).
The colour of 峾 and Śrī ṛṣṇa.
Śrī ṛṣṇa is the eighth child of ٱ𱹲ī. The elder brother 峾 is white in complexion while the younger, Śrī ṛṣṇa is black in complexion. There is a story behind this. The devas decided to be born as ҴDZ (shepherds) in the earth to be of help to ṛṣṇa in his duty of killing the wicked. They informed Ѳ屹ṣṇ of their decision and the Lord was immensely pleased. He then took one white hair from his head and said that it would go to dzṇī’s womb and change into 峾 and taking a black hair said that it would go into ٱ𱹲ī’s womb and change into Śrī ṛṣṇa. It was thus that Balabhadra became white and Śrī ṛṣṇa black. (Chapter 199, Ādi Parva, Ѳٲ).
Brothers.
Balabhadrarāma had six brothers born of his mother dzṇ�. They were: Gada, ṇa, Durddama, Vipula, Dhruva, and ṛt. (Navama Skandha, 岵ٲ).
4) Till their marriage Śrī ṛṣṇa spent his childhood in Aṃbāḍi and 峾, in Ѳܰ. Once the sage Garga went to the house of Vasudeva and it was he who then told the story behind the births of 峾 and ṛṣṇa. Hearing this Vasudeva went to Ѳܰ and brought Balabhadrarāma also to Aṃbāḍi. Gargamuni then performed all those sacred rites which were usually done to boys of that age and both of them then remained in Aṃbāḍi. Several important events happened during their stay here, notable among which are: ūٲmokṣam (killing of the demoness ūٲ and giving her salvation). Śakaṭāsuravadha (killing the asura, Ś첹ṭa), Tṛṇāvarttavadha (killing the asura, Tṛṇāvartta), Vatsāsuravadha (killing the asura, Vatsa), Bakavadha (killing the demon bird, Baka), Aghāsuravadha (killing the asura, Agha), Dhenukāsuravadha (killing the asura, Dhenuka), Kāliamardana (beating the snake, Kālia) and Pralambavadha (killing Pralamba). ṃs conducted a Cāpapūjā (worship of the bow) to kill ṛṣṇa. It was on a festive scale and both ṛṣṇa and 峾 went to Ѳܰ to attend the same. There they killed ṃs and after that went to the ś of Իī貹Ծ Ѳṣi for education. When they completed their education they at the request of the preceptor gave as ҳܻܰ岹ṣiṇ� (The fee you pay in the end for the instructions given) the lost child of the guru. Then they went to Ѳܰ and there several events took place, important among which was the fight between ṛṣṇa and Ի. By this time the 岹s were becoming lean financially and so to make some money ṛṣṇa and 峾 went to the diamond-infested mountain of Gomantaka. On their way they met ʲśܰ峾 doing penance under a Banyan tree. On the advice of ʲśܰ峾 they killed Sṛgālavasudeva and got immense wealth. On their return 峾 and ṛṣṇa along with many 岹s went and settled down in the island, ٱ, in the western ocean. (Daśama Skandha, 岵ٲ).
Marriage.
Before the advent of 峾 and ṛṣṇa the island ٱ was known as śٳī. It was ruled over by a famous Ჹṣi, Revata. This king was the son of King Ānartta and grandson of emperor Śپ. Revata got a hundred sons, Kukudmin being the first and a daughter named 𱹲ī. When the time for marriage of his daughter came the King was anxious to find out a fitting husband for her and he went to Brahmaloka to take the advice of . 𱹲ī also accompanied him. There stupefied he saw Vedas, ۲ñ, mountains, rivers, oceans, Ṛtus, all in divine figures standing before , worshipping him. The sweet celestial songs gave them both untold happiness. He then told the purpose of his visit and meditating for some time told him that Balabhadrarāma, son of Vasudeva, was the only one person suited for her. The king returned to ٱ and gave his daughter in marriage to 峾. (Saptama Skandha, Devī 岵ٲ).
A pilgrimage.
When the great ṇḍ-Kaurava battle started ṛṣṇa became the charioteer of Arjuna and 峾 went to the forest, ś. He was not much interested in the battle. At the forest of ṣa he saw ūٲ telling Purāṇic stories to the several sages assembled there before him. ūٲ did not rise up when he saw 峾 and the latter moved to anger very soon cut off the head of ūٲ. The sages assembled there decried the act of 峾 and lamented deeply over the incident. At this 峾 promised that he would give birth, from the dead body of ūٲ, to one who will be well versed in all the Vedas, śٰ and sciences. The sages then blessed 峾.
During that time there lived in the vicinity of ṣa forest a demon called Balvala (Vatkala). He used to annoy the sages there and the sages requested 峾 to put a stop to the atrocities of that demon. He immediately killed the demon by his weapon, Hala, and then raised from the dead body of ūٲ a 貹ṇḍٲ of great erudition. Later, to remedy the sin of killing ūٲ, 峾, repentant, visited all the sacred places in ٲ. Once when he heard about the grim battle between Duryodhana and īԲ, he went to the battle-field and tried his best to stop the war. Disappointed he returned to ٱ. (Daśama Skandha, Chapter 79, 岵ٲ).
Death.
Once the ṛṣis 岹, ṇv and վś峾ٰ came to ٱ. To make fun of them some of the 岹s dressed a 岹 like a pregnant woman and producing her before the sages asked them what child she would deliver. Enraged at this the munis said in one voice that she would deliver a mace and that iron mace would be the cause of the end of all 岹s.
After the Ѳٲ battle the 岹 dynasty remained alive only for thirtysix years. After that by the curse of the brahmin the 岹s were all killed in a drunken brawl between themselves in the very presence of ṛṣṇa and Balabhadra. This happened on the shore of Prabhāsa tīrtha and 峾 was sitting there then in deep meditation. Suddenly the soul of 峾 went out from his mouth in the shape of a white serpent and the serpent entering the nether world was given a warm welcome by the prominent serpents there. (Mausala Parva, Ѳٲ).
Other details.
(1) It was Balabhadrarāma who taught īԲ the mace-fight. (Śǰ첹 4, Chapter 138, Ādi Parva, Ѳٲ).
(2) Balabhadrarāma was present along with Śrī ṛṣṇa at the marriage of ñī. (Śǰ첹 17, Chapter 185, Ādi Parva, Ѳٲ).
(3) Balabhadrarāma became very indignant when he heard about Arjuna carrying away ܲ and it was ṛṣṇa who pacified him. (Chapter 22, Ādi Parva, Ѳٲ).
(4) He was present at the marriage of Abhimanyu conducted at the city of 貹屹ⲹ. (Śǰ첹 21, Chapter 72, վṭa Parva, Ѳٲ).
(5) He was very insistent that the ṇḍs and Kauravas should come to a truce. (Chapter 2, Udyoga Parva, Ѳٲ).
(6) He witnessed the battle of maces between Duryodhana and īԲ at ܰܰṣeٰ. (Chapter 34, Śⲹ Parva, Ѳٲ).
(7) 峾 conducted a pilgrim tour and visited all the holy places of ٲ at a time when the ṇḍ-Kaurava war was in full swing. (Chapter, 35-54, Śⲹ Parva, Ѳٲ).
(8) 峾 was of opinion that it was unjust of īԲ to have killed Duryodhana and was about to kill īԲ. (Śǰ첹 4, Chapter 60, Śⲹ Parva, Ѳٲ).
(9) Once 峾 spoke in extolling terms about the secrets of Dharma. (Śǰ첹 17, Chapters 126, Śⲹ Parva, Ѳٲ).
(10) It was 峾 who performed the obsequies of Abhimanyu. (Śǰ첹 6, Chapter 62, ś Parva, Ѳٲ).
(11) He went to Ჹپܰ when ۳ܻṣṭ performed the ś yāga. (Śǰ첹 4, Chapter 66, ś Parva, Ѳٲ).
(12) 峾 introduced Prohibition in ٱ. (Śǰ첹 29, Chapter 1, Mausala Parva, Ѳٲ).
(13) Once he made dry the river Իī. (See Իī).
*) Since the life of Balabhadra is so mixed with that of ṛṣṇa a complete life story of 峾 could be had only if it is read along with that of ṛṣṇa.
