In Samrajya-lakshmi-pithika are enumerated a number of miscellaneous (formulae) required by the righteous king in the performance of religious rites like japa (medititive repetition) and homa (sacrificial offerings). 256 he should, first of all, begin all religious works like japa and homa with suitable formulae, addressed to lord 51 Ganesa in Vedic and tantric treatises. This he should do to avert all types of obstacles and to achieve success in mission of any kind (30.4-5). Japa, Homa and Balikarma (the act of offering) 52 performed with Durga mantra are considered efficacious in safeguarding the capital, kingdom and above all, oneself. Also, this formula(e) is considered potent in obtaining victory in war-field and in quelling fear of various sorts (6-7). Suitable rituals, iapa and homa etc. are to be performed with the three syllabled formula of Siva, viz., 53 'Tryambakam ... ....' (Rg-Veda 7.59.12) known as Mrtyunjaya as per the tantric injunctions, to attain long-life. 51. 52. 53. 257 For an early cure, (from diseases etc.) the king should perform japa, homa etc. with Survaprakasakamantras (both vedic and trantric) (9-10). Performance of rituals like japa and homa etc. with 55 the formula of Samrajya-lakshmi is considered to be most potent in 54 bestowing the king with kingdom. Similar rituals with Srisukta (Rg-Veda-Khila-Sukta 5.87.1 ff) leads one to boundless prosperity (amita aisvarva) (11-12). 258 In order to retrieve or recover lost articles, the king should ordain the priests to repeat the 'twenty-syllabled formula of Kartavirva for one full circle (mandala) (16). 58 59 By similar worship with varahaman tra the Yajamana is said to get vast kingdom (prthvi prthvI) while the king, to avert fear from monsters (raksas), is instructed to perform one full mandala (circle) of japa and homa with 60 the help of Nrsimhamanu (the formula of man-lion) (17-18). Similarly, one who intends to destroy others (paramarana) should use the mantras of Atharvaveda beginning with the formula, yan kalpayanti' etc. (Atharvaveda 10.1.1-32) (designated as Krtyasukta), in the performance of a ritual consisting of japa, homa, ball and Kilaka. And, homa and Japa 71 with the santanagopalamantra is useful in blessing, some one with children (27-29). 10)
