The 搁腻办峁�a蝉补 King of 尝补峁卥腻 who had ten heads.

Genealogy.

Descended from 痴颈峁ａ箛耻 迟丑耻蝉:鈥�叠谤补丑尘腻鈥�Pulastya鈥�痴颈艣谤补惫补蝉鈥�搁腻惫补峁嘺.

Birth.

痴颈艣谤补惫补蝉, grandson of 叠谤补丑尘腻 and son of Pulastya married 碍补颈办补蝉墨, daughter of Sum膩l墨. While 痴颈艣谤补惫补蝉 and 碍补颈办补蝉墨 were living in the forest 艢le峁�m膩taka, 碍补颈办补蝉墨 became pregnant. She delivered four children in four 驰腻尘补蝉, with an interval of one 测腻尘补 between them. The elder three were the famous 搁腻办峁�a蝉补s, 搁腻惫补峁嘺, 碍耻尘产丑补办补谤峁嘺 and 痴颈产丑墨峁�a峁嘺; the fourth one, a girl, was named 艢奴谤辫补峁嘺办丑腻. (Kamba 搁腻尘腻测补峁嘺, B膩lak膩峁囜笉a).

Kubera was another son of 痴颈艣谤补惫补蝉 born of another wife called 顿别惫补惫补谤峁嚹� alias 莫labil膩. As soon as he came of age Kubera captured the 笔耻峁�p补办补 chariot and began ruling the kingdom with 尝补峁卥腻 as capital. (Uttara 搁腻尘腻测补峁嘺).

搁腻惫补峁嘺 secured boons.

碍补颈办补蝉墨 (搁腻惫补峁嘺鈥檚 mother) who became envious of the pomp and prowess of Kubera advised her son to secure boons from 叠谤补丑尘腻 by tapas and become equal to Kubera. Accordingly he went to 骋辞办补谤峁嘺 with his brothers and began tapas. 碍耻尘产丑补办补谤峁嘺 did tapas for 10,000 years; 痴颈产丑墨峁�a峁嘺 also did tapas for 10,000 years standing on one foot. 搁腻惫补峁嘺, standing in the middle of the five fires, meditated upon 叠谤补丑尘腻. Though 10,000 years passed thus, 叠谤补丑尘腻 did not appear yet. 搁腻惫补峁嘺 then cut one of his ten heads and made an offering of it to 叠谤补丑尘腻 in the fire. Thus, within 9000 years he cut nine of his heads and offered them to 叠谤补丑尘腻 in the fire. Lastly when he was about to cut off his tenth head, 叠谤补丑尘腻 appeared and asked him to choose whatever boon he wanted. 搁腻惫补峁嘺 chose the boon that from none but men should he meet with his death. 碍耻尘产丑补办补谤峁嘺 desired to secure the boon of 'nirdevatva' (Absence of the devas) but secured by a slip of the tongue 'nidr膩vatvam' (sleep). 痴颈产丑墨峁�a峁嘺 chose devotion to 痴颈峁ａ箛耻. On his return after securing the boons, 搁腻惫补峁嘺 occupied 尝补峁卥腻, drove away Kubera and took his pu峁�paka chariot. 搁腻惫补峁嘺 further declared 惭补丑腻惫颈峁ａ箛耻 to be his eternal enemy. Hearing about 搁腻惫补峁嘺鈥檚 victory the 搁腻办峁�a蝉补s from 笔腻迟腻濒补 came to live in 尝补峁卥腻.

Family life.

R膩vana married 惭补苍诲辞诲补谤墨, fosterdaughter of 惭补测腻蝉耻谤补 and three sons, 惭别驳丑补苍腻诲补, 础迟颈办腻测补 and Ak峁�akum膩ra were born to the couple. He then conquered the whole world with the cooperation of his sons and other 搁腻办峁�a蝉补s. The 础峁ａ弓补诲颈办辫腻濒补办补蝉 (protectors of the eight regions) were subjugated. He attacked Devaloka, but was defeated and imprisoned. 惭别驳丑补苍腻诲补 by magical trickery captured Indra and released 搁腻惫补峁嘺 from custody. 惭别驳丑补苍腻诲补 came to be called Indrajit from that day onwards.

Curses heaped on 搁腻惫补峁嘺.

As a result of ruling the land, as a terror to the whole world, for many years and of his triumphal journey 搁腻惫补峁嘺 had invited on his head eighteen 艣腻辫补蝉 (curses) as follows.

(i) 狈补濒补办奴产补谤补 艣腻辫补. 搁腻惫补峁嘺 once insulted 搁补尘产丑腻, the betrothed wife of 狈补濒补办奴产补谤补 during her tour at a place near 础濒补办腻. On hearing about the insult 狈补濒补办奴产补谤补 cursed that 搁腻惫补峁嘺 should die with his ten heads broken.

(ii) 痴别诲补惫补迟墨艣腻辫补. While 痴别诲补惫补迟墨, the only daughter of sage 碍耻艣补诲丑惫补箩补, was doing tapas to secure 艢r墨 惭腻诲丑补惫补 as her husband. 搁腻惫补峁嘺 committed rape on her and she cursed him 迟丑耻蝉:鈥�"You and your family will be ruined by Lord 狈腻谤腻测补峁嘺 on account of me."

(iii) Br膩hma峁嘺艣腻辫补. He invited a Vedic brahmin to install the idol of 罢谤颈辫耻谤补蝉耻苍诲补谤墨 given to him by 艢颈惫补. As the brahmin happened to be a bit late to come, 搁腻惫补峁嘺 imprisoned him for seven days, and the old brahmin cursed that 搁腻惫补峁嘺 would be imprisoned seven months by a man.

(iv) 狈补苍诲颈办别艣惫补谤补艣腻辫补. For calling him 'monkey' at 碍补颈濒腻蝉补, 狈补苍诲颈办别艣惫补谤补 cursed that 搁腻惫补峁嘺 and his kingdom would be destroyed by monkeys.

(v) 痴补蝉颈峁ａ弓丑补艣腻辫补. As 痴补蝉颈峁ａ弓丑补 refused 搁腻惫补峁嘺鈥檚 invitation to teach the Vedas etc. he took the former captive. When he was released from captivity by the solar King 碍耻惫补濒补测腻艣惫补, 痴补蝉颈峁ａ弓丑补 cursed that 搁腻惫补峁嘺 and his family would be destroyed by those born in the solar dynasty.

(vi) 础峁ａ弓腻惫补办谤补艣腻辫补. 搁腻惫补峁嘺 once saw sage 础峁ａ弓腻惫补办谤补 at 艢le峁�m膩taka and gave him a kick saying, 'Oh! handsome fellow! I shall cure your eight hunches", and the sage cursed 搁腻惫补峁嘺 as follows:鈥擣or kicking me, a poor innocent sage, you will be kicked from head to foot and foot to head by monkeys."

(vii) 顿补迟迟腻迟谤别测补艣腻辫补. 搁腻惫补峁嘺 once poured on his own head water kept purified by mantras by 顿补迟迟腻迟谤别测补 to bathe the head of his Guru, and the latter cursed that 搁腻惫补峁嘺鈥檚 head would be polluted by the feet of monkeys.

(viii) 顿惫补颈辫腻测补苍补艣腻辫补. When 搁腻惫补峁嘺 molested and wounded the lips of 顿惫补颈辫腻测补苍补鈥檚 sister in his own presence he cursed that 搁腻惫补峁嘺鈥檚 sister would be mutilated by a man and he would be humiliated by monkeys.

(ix) M膩峁囜笉avya艣腻辫补. During a pleasure trip of his with 惭补苍诲辞诲补谤墨 搁腻惫补峁嘺 cruelly manhandled M膩峁囜笉avya尘补丑补谤峁�i, when the latter cursed that 搁腻惫补峁嘺 too would be roughly handled by a monkey.

(x) Atri艣腻辫补. 搁腻惫补峁嘺 once dragged by hair the wife of Atri in his very presence, and Atri cursed that 搁腻惫补峁嘺 will have to witness his wife being denuded of her dress and dragged by the hair by monkeys.

(xi) 狈腻谤补诲补艣腻辫补. 狈腻谤补诲补 refused to explain the meaning of 'Om' to 搁腻惫补峁嘺 and the latter threatened to cut the tongue of 狈腻谤补诲补. 狈腻谤补诲补 then cursed that all the ten heads of 搁腻惫补峁嘺 would be cut by a man.

(xii) 峁歵uvarma艣腻辫补. 搁腻惫补峁嘺 once raped Madanama帽jar墨, wife of 峁歵uvarman, who lived as an anchorite in the marutta forest, and the latter cursed that 搁腻惫补峁嘺 would be killed by a man.

(xiii) Maudgalya艣腻辫补. Once 尘补丑补谤峁�i Maudgalya was sitting in the svastika pose resting his neck on the 测辞驳补诲补峁囜笉补 (a short stick-like piece of wood with a handle) 搁腻惫补峁嘺 happened to come there and he cut into two the 测辞驳补诲补峁囜笉补 with his Candrah膩sa (sword) with the result that the 尘补丑补谤峁�i fell down with face upwards and broke his back-bone. The 尘补丑补谤峁�i then cursed that 搁腻惫补峁嘺鈥檚 Candrah膩sa would prove ineffective in future.

(xiv) Br膩hma峁嘺janan墨艣腻辫补. Certain young brahmin girls who had gone for sea-bath were humiliated by 搁腻惫补峁嘺 in the presence of their mothers when they cursed that the wife of 搁腻惫补峁嘺 would be insulted in his very presence by monkeys.

(xv) Agni艣腻辫补. 搁腻惫补峁嘺 once humiliated Sv膩h膩dev墨, wife of Agni in his very presence and Agni cursed that 搁腻惫补峁嘺鈥檚 wife would be humiliated by monkeys in his presence.

(xvi) 础苍补谤补峁噛补艣腻辫补. 搁腻惫补峁嘺 killed by one blow on his chest King 础苍补谤补峁噛补 of the solar dynasty who sought refuge with him, and the King cursed that 搁腻惫补峁嘺 would die with all his ten heads cut by the arrows of a prince of the solar dynasty.

(xvii) 叠峁沨补蝉辫补迟颈 艣腻辫补. When 搁腻惫补峁嘺 was about to return after conquering Devaloka and taking the devas captives, Sulekh膩dev墨, daughter of 叠峁沨补蝉辫补迟颈 tried to take shelter somewhere when 搁腻惫补峁嘺 attempted to catch her by force. Then 叠峁沨补蝉辫补迟颈 cursed that 搁腻惫补峁嘺 would die hit by the arrows of 搁腻尘补.

(xviii) Brahmadeva艣腻辫补. 搁腻惫补峁嘺 tried to humiliate Pu帽jik膩dev墨, daughter of 叠谤补丑尘腻, and the latter cursed that 搁腻惫补峁嘺 would die with all his ten heads broken if he touched unwilling women.

搁腻惫补峁嘺 got Candrah膩sa.

He threatened Devas.

搁腻惫补峁嘺, during his triumphal march with the armies, once came to the U艣墨rav墨ra mountain. Then the King called Marutta was performing 惭补丑别艣惫补谤补 测补箩帽补 on the plains of the mountain. Indra and the other devas came to receive their portion of the offerings. But they ran away in fear on the arrival of 搁腻惫补峁嘺. Indra assumed the form of a peacock, Yama that of a crow, Kubera that of a chameleon and 痴补谤耻峁嘺 that of a swan, and the devas, thus assuming various forms went away in different directions. Marutta got angry and got ready to fight 搁腻惫补峁嘺. But, as the 尘补丑补谤峁�is prevented him from it no fighting took place. 搁腻惫补峁嘺 returned with the glories of victory.

He defeated 碍腻濒补.

Once 狈腻谤补诲补 felt the urge to witness a quarrel. He went to 尝补峁卥腻 and told 搁腻惫补峁嘺 tales about 碍腻濒补, that 碍腻濒补 was more powerful than 搁腻惫补峁嘺, that 碍腻濒补 would soon be causing 搁腻惫补峁嘺鈥檚 death etc. These stories awakened the anger in 搁腻惫补峁嘺 against 碍腻濒补, and the former, with a strong army challenged 碍腻濒补, and war between the two started. 叠谤补丑尘腻 was in a fix, for he had given 搁腻惫补峁嘺 the boon that the latter would be killed only by a man. At the same time he had given the boon to 碍腻濒补 that anybody thrashed with his (碍腻濒补's) club would die. 叠谤补丑尘腻, therefore, decided to end the fighting between 碍腻濒补 and 搁腻惫补峁嘺 somehow, and he approached 碍腻濒补 and requested him to withdraw from fighting. Accordingly 碍腻濒补 acknowledged defeat and thus the fighting ended.

搁腻惫补峁嘺 attacked 笔腻迟腻濒补.

Afterwards 搁腻惫补峁嘺 marched with his army to 笔腻迟腻濒补 where he defeated 罢补办峁�a办补, the 苍腻驳补 King and exacted tributes from him. Then he attacked 狈颈惫腻迟补办补惫补肠补蝉. When the fighting became very fierce 叠谤补丑尘腻 intervened and brought about a compromise between the two. Next, 搁腻惫补峁嘺 attacked Surabhi in 痴补谤耻峁嘺鈥檚 palace, but the 搁腻办峁�a蝉补s who emerged from the pores on Surabhi鈥檚 body drove away 搁腻惫补峁嘺.

His death.

搁腻惫补峁嘺鈥檚 sister, 艢奴谤辫补峁嘺办丑腻 met 艢r墨 搁腻尘补 and 尝补办峁�m补峁嘺 at 笔补帽肠补惫补峁��� and wanted first 搁腻尘补 and then 尝补办峁�m补峁嘺 to marry her. But, 尝补办峁�m补峁嘺 cut away her nose, breasts etc. Enraged by this 搁腻惫补峁嘺 abducted 厂墨迟腻. 艢r墨 搁腻尘补, with the help of the monkey-army, killed 搁腻惫补峁嘺 in war. (See under 搁腻尘补.
