Story of Pit�

ʾṛs are a set of demigods. From Manuprajāpati, son of , were born the ٲṣi like Ѳī and they in turn created the ʾṛs. Besides Ѳī and his set many others like վ� ʳܰṣa and have created ʾṛs. Some ʳܰṇa state that ʾṛs are of daily creation. in the beginning created three sets of ʾṛs with form and four with brightness making thus seven sets. The three sets of bodied pitṛs are Ծṣvٳٲ, ṣa岹 and dz and the four bright ones are Yama, Anala, Soma and Aryaman (10th Skandha, Devī Bhāgavata).

"manor hairaṇyagarbhasya ye marīcyādaya� ܳ� / teṣāmṛṣīṇāṃ sarveṣām putrā� 辱ṛgṇāḥ smṛtā�" // (śǰ첹 194, chapter 8, manusmṛti). ʾṛs (manes) are classified into two types: The Ծṣvٳٲ and ṣa岹. Of these the Ծṣvٳٲ do not perform Yāgas and the ṣa岹 are those who perform yāgas. Besides these two major divisions they are classified into many other groups as follows:

Somasadasya (s).

վ� ʳܰṣa is the creator of these ʾṛs. Somasadasyas are the ʾṛs of Sādhyadevas.

Agniṣvātta (s).

They are the pitṛs of devas.

ṣa岹.

These ʾṛs are the creation of the sage Atri. They are the manes of daityas, Բ, ⲹṣa, gandharvas, uragas (serpents), ṣa (demons), ܱṇa and kinnaras.

Somapā (s).

They are the sons of the sage ṛg and are the manes of brahmins.

Havirbhuk (s).

The sage ṅg is the father of these ʾṛs who are the manes of ṣaٰⲹ.

Ājyapā (s).

These are the sons of the sage Pulastya and are the manes of ղśⲹ.

Sukālika (s).

Sons of the sage ղṣṭ, these ʾṛs are the manes of the Śū.

To the seven sages like Ѳī were born the pitṛs and to the pitṛs were born the devāsuras (devas and asuras) and to the devāsuras were born everything else in this universe, animate and inanimate. (Chapter 3, Manusmṛti).

Performing a Ś (offering obsequial oblations to the departed) is just like a ⲹñ. The oblations should be offered in either silver or silver cum copper pots. վś𱹲 are the guardians of the pitṛs. Therefore the oblations should be offered after worshipping the վś𱹲 first and then the pitṛs and then վṣṇ. (See under Ś).
