Part 1.2 - Origin and Number of Caste
The division of caste was first traced in the ʳܰṣaūٲ of the ṻ岹.
According to this ūٲ, the different ṇa were created from different parts of the body of ܰṣa or primal man.
- the ṇa were created from his head,
- the ṣaٰⲹ were created from his hands,
- the ղśⲹ were created from his thighs and
- the Śū were created from his feet.[1]
Apart from the ʳܰṣaūٲ, in the 8th ṇḍ of the ṻ岹 also, the division of society into ṇa is found. There the three ṇa viz., the Brahma, the ṣaٰ and the վś are mentioned.[2]
The Śatapatha ṇa expressly mentions that [the following are the four ṇa]:
In the ѲԳܲṛt, Manu has emphatically said that there are only four ṇa and there is no fifth ṇa.[4]
