This page relates ‘Citations of Kohala in the Sangitasaramrita, etc. of the thesis dealing with Kohala’s contribution to the Sanskrit textual tradition of ancient Indian performing arts. The study focuses specifically on music (Gita), dance (Nritya), and drama (Natya). Although Kohala’s original works have not been found, numerous references to him across Lakshana-Granthas (treatises) and works by modern scholars indicate his significance.
Part 22 - Citations of Kohala in the Saṅgītasārāmṛta, etc.
The significance of the work Saṅgītasārāmṛta (1729-1735 C.E.) with reference to Kohala lies in the fact that it bears the same quotation of Kohala (regarding the number of śܳپ) that is found in ṛhśī (ref.para 2.1.2.1). This particular śǰ첹 is seen as one that is mentioned by Tulajā as part of a lengthy discussion on the topic of śܳپ. This is the one and only quotation of Kohala which has survived right from the time of ṛhśī upto the 18th century C.E. But whether Tulajā had access to a work of Kohala is questionable. It seems more likely that he has taken this reference from ṛhśī, (or even from or the commentaries on ṅgīٲٲ첹, since it is unclear how many authors in the post-鲹ٲ첹 period had access to ṛhśī). The reason for this being that no other quotation or reference to Kohala is found anywhere else in the text of ṃgīٲ-sārāmṛta. The importance of this quotation in this particular work is that the concept of Kohala regarding the number of śܳپ has lived through the centuries, even though the actual work that he composed might not have.
