Kohala in the Sanskrit textual tradition (Study)

by Padma Sugavanam | 2011 | 95,782 words

This page relates ‘Summary (of chapter 3) of the thesis dealing with Kohala’s contribution to the Sanskrit textual tradition of ancient Indian performing arts. The study focuses specifically on music (Gita), dance (Nritya), and drama (Natya). Although Kohala’s original works have not been found, numerous references to him across Lakshana-Granthas (treatises) and works by modern scholars indicate his significance.

Taking the overall picture of Kohala as seen in published ±ô²¹°ìá¹£aṇa²µ°ù²¹²Ô³Ù³ó²¹²õ over the centuries, it can be observed that there is no single work of Kohala which is seen continuously over time. The material available to us seems like a group of disjointed references explaining theories relevant applicable to different periods of time. The main reason for this is the lack of common strands of information.

In all the ±ô²¹°ìá¹£aṇa²µ°ù²¹²Ô³Ù³ó²¹²õ taken up for study, repetition of material on Kohala is found only in three cases.

i. The quotation of Kohala regarding the number of Å›°ù³Ü³Ù¾±²õ is seen in µþá¹›h²¹»å»å±ðśī (7th century C.E.), ³§³Ü»å³óÄå°ì²¹°ù²¹ (14th century C.E.), °²¹±ôÄå²Ô¾±»å³ó¾± (1450 C.E.) and ³§²¹á¹…gÄ«³Ù²¹²õÄå°ùÄ峾ṛt²¹ (17th century C.E.). This probably represents the only concept of the earliest Kohala which has stood the test of time.

ii. The nine types of breathing mentioned in ³§²¹á¹…gÄ«³Ù²¹°ù²¹³Ù²ÔÄå°ì²¹°ù²¹ (13th century C.E.), ±·á¹›t²âÄå»å³ó²âÄå²â²¹ (14th-15th century C.E.) and ³§²¹á¹…gÄ«³Ù²¹°ù²¹Âá²¹ (15th century C.E.). This particular reference first finds place in a work as late as the 13th century C.E. and is seen for only a limited span of about two hundred years (13th -15th centuries C.E.) and is not found in subsequent ±ô²¹°ìá¹£aṇa²µ°ù²¹²Ô³Ù³ó²¹²õ.

iii. References relating to many topics are found in the works of the Orissa region in the 17th and 18th centuries C.E. This represents the largest bulk of information which is seen with continuity in one work after another in the same time period.
