This page relates ‘Citations of Kohala in the Natyadarpana of the thesis dealing with Kohala’s contribution to the Sanskrit textual tradition of ancient Indian performing arts. The study focuses specifically on music (Gita), dance (Nritya), and drama (Natya). Although Kohala’s original works have not been found, numerous references to him across Lakshana-Granthas (treatises) and works by modern scholars indicate his significance.
Part 5 - Citations of Kohala in the Nāṭyadarpaṇa
Nāṭyadarpaṇa (11th century C.E.), the work of Jain authors 峾Ի and Guṇacandra deals with the exclusively with the aspect of drama. The work and its commentary DZ貹ñṛtپ (also written by the same authors) refer to Kohala in the context of the ܱ貹ū貹첹 called ṭṭ첹 (referred to in this work as ṭa첹) (ref.para 2.3.7.3) and the rules regarding the ṣk첹 (ref.para 2.3.4.6.1). From this work, it can be gleaned that Kohala had explained the ṣaṇa of the ܱ貹ū貹첹s. Unfortunately, they do not quote any of these. In fact the reference is made by the authors in order to avoid lengthy discussions on the subject as the felt that these have already been dealt with by Kohala. As discussed in the case of Բī, the references here too are well within the realm of the tradition.
