Historical Elements in the Matsya Purana

This page relates ‘Surya & Candra dynasty� of the study on the historical elements of the Matsya-purana: one of the eighteen Mahapuranas which are Sanskrit texts that have preserved the cultural heritage, philosophy, religion, geography, etc of ancient India. This Matsyapurana was originally written in 20,000 verses and deals with topics such as architecture, ancient history, polity, religion and philosophy.

ūⲹ & Candra dynasty
Aditi gave birth to վ (ūⲹ) as a son frm Ѳṣi śⲹ貹. վ had three wives named Sañjā, Rāñjī and ʰ. Among them Rāñjī, daughter of Revata, produced a son named Raivata and ʰ produced a son named ʰta. Daughter of վś첹, Sañjā gave birth to Vaivasvata Manu, Yama and one girl named Yamuna. Yama and Yamuna were born twins. After some times when Sañjā could not bear the light of վ, she produced an indescribable woman like her on from body. She became famous as .[1] produced a son of the same as Manu.He became famous as 屹ṇi due to being same as ṇa as Vaivasvata Manu. Subsequently, ūⲹ also produced a son named ŚԾ and two girls named ղ貹ī and վṣṭ from the womb of ⲹ.[2] śī Kumaras originated by Sañjā and ūⲹ. Due to the origin from the nasal part of Sañjā, they were also known as both ٲⲹ and Dasra.[3] ten sons of Vaivasvata Manu were born. Among them Ila was eldest. The rest nine sons are ṣv, ś, Arista, ٳṛṣṭa, ṣyԳٲ, ṣa, Śپ, ṛṣ and 岵.[4] Ila entered to ŚԲ due to conquest. Mahadeva had the bless on this forest (ŚԲ) that if a man enters this forest, he will become a woman. Ila did not know this, so she became a woman as soon as she entered the ŚԲ. Later his name was Ilā.[5]
King ʳܰū, son of Ila was about to increase the Candra dynasty. Similarly, ѲᲹ ṣv has been called the exponent of ūⲹ dynasty. While living in ܰṣaDzԾ Ila gave birth to a son named Sudyumna. Again Sudymna has three unbeatable sons named Utkala, Gaya and Haritaśca. Ila dedicated Utkal (Odisa) to Utkala , Gayāpradesh to Gaya and eastern front direction (state) of the border of Kurupradesh to Haritaśca. After that he anointed his eldest son Pururavā at ʰپٳԱܰ .[6] After Sudymna, ṣv, the eldest son of Manu, became the head of Madhya deśa . Among the other sons of Manu, there was a Ѵdzī son named Śܳ of ṣyԳٲ. 岵 had a son īṣa and ٳṛṣṭa had three son ٳṛṣṭaketu, 侱ٰٳ and 鲹ṇaṛṣṭa. Śپ had a son named ĀԲٲ and a daughter named Sukanya. ĀԲٲ had a great son named dzԲ. The country ruled by ĀԲٲ was named ĀԲٲ (Gujrat and its capital was the city of śٳ (Dwarka). dzԲ’s son was Reva who was also called as Raivata and Kakudmī. He was the eldest of Rocamana’s hundred sons. Reva had a girl named 𱹲ī who was wife of Balarām, elder brother of Śīṛṣṇa. ūṣa had many sons, who became known as ūṣa in the world.[7]
