CHAPTER-V 215 V. Aesthetical values behind the arrangement of Trees and Gardens—V.0. An Introduction to Aesthetical Values:—Anything that relate to the appreciation of art and beauty is called aesthetic. Therefore, aesthetics is the study of art and beauty relating to a specified subject of discussion. In this chapter we deal with the aesthetical values behind the arrangement of trees and gardens with special reference to Vrksayurveda of Surapala. In ancient Indian culture, love of plants and flowers was considered as a valuable help for finding and uniting with the psychic. May be because of this reason, India has a rich heritage in ornamental gardening and especially in growing trees. Trees and gardens have always been associated with Indian culture from the ancient Vedic time. We get beautiful descriptions of plant and gardens from the Vedic, ancient Hindu epics, Sanskrit literatures, sculptures, and paintings. However, the scope of such arrangement of trees and gardens is limited in other Sanskrit texts whereas; the same is well evident in Vrikshayurveda Thus, a complete chapter of the text deals with the aesthetical values behind the laying out of a garden. 216 therefore in his 11th chapter has described the importance and arrangement of plants and trees in pleasure gardens, the aspects of beautification of garden environment, designs of placing lakes, ponds, pools, wells, etc. in the process of beautification of garden. Surapala described the implication of pleasure gardens and gave emphasis to create such gardens in the vicinity of house, highways, and places of public gathering for recreation. Moreover, the description of such gardening aspects with arrangement of plants, trees, creepers, bushes, etc. along with the concept of garden designs are reflected in other Sanskrit literatures such as, Agni Purana, Visnudharmottara Purana, Brhat Samhita, Brhatvastumala, etc.
