The Matsya Purana describes the possible forms of the Brahmanical temple and says. that they may be built either of wood or brick or stone. In the early eleventh century, the Samarangana Sutradhara 40 speaks of the prasadas which should be built in towns (nagara). They are to be built of stone and baked bricks. In chapter 59.217-239, details are given of the wooden temple (harmya) the rock-cut temple (layana) the cloth made temple (pattisa). The Bhavishya Purana addresses the tree directly as 'Gog of gods', after having consoled the tree: 'O tree go to the temple of the gods for the benefit of all the tree world. There you shall remain safe from the woodcutter's and from fire. You will obtain the position of a god and people will worship you. 141 The temples can be made of bricks, wood or stone. The Vishnudharmottara Purana describes the laying of the first stone (silanyasa). A stone jar should be placed in the centre of the vastumandala of 64 squares and the stones anointed and covered with cloth should be laid down, following the course of the sun and beginning from the north-east. 43 The Agni Purana says that the stone brick is used for building a temple." 44
