Source: Wisdom Library: Brihat Samhita by Varahamihira峁峁ａ弓测补产诲补 (啶粪し啷嵿啷嵿く啶啶�) refers to a 鈥渃ycle of 60 years鈥�, according to the B峁沨atsa峁僪it膩 (chapter 2), an encyclopedic Sanskrit work written by Var膩hamihira mainly focusing on the science of ancient Indian astronomy astronomy (Jyoti峁).鈥擜ccordingly, 鈥淲e shall now proceed to give a brief description of (the qualifications of) a 箩测辞迟颈峁办补. [...] He must have a clear knowledge of the causes of Solar, Savana, Siderial and Lunar months as well as of intercalary lunations and intercalary days [i.e., avama]. He must have a knowledge of the beginning and end of 艢a峁ａ弓y膩bda (a cycle of 60 years) [峁峁ａ弓测补产诲补?], a Yuga (5 years), Var峁 (a year), M膩sa (a month), Thina (a day) and Hor膩 (an hour) and of their lords鈥�.
Jyotisha (啶溹啶啶むた啶�, 箩测辞迟颈峁 or jyotish) refers to 鈥榓stronomy鈥� or 鈥淰edic astrology鈥� and represents the fifth of the six Vedangas (additional sciences to be studied along with the Vedas). Jyotisha concerns itself with the study and prediction of the movements of celestial bodies, in order to calculate the auspicious time for rituals and ceremonies.
