237 mystic sciences. I am a Vidyadhara named Anangarati. Being harassed by my hostile relatives who have usurped my kingdom, I want to end my life. But this newly married wife of mine obstructs me in the attempt." I took pity on the couple and offered him my 鈻� own kingdom and asked him to give up the idea of committing suicide. He, on the other hand, asked me to attain the mystic powers on his behalf and get him back his own kingdom. I accepted his request and started the penance for attaining superhuman powers by means of the mystic formula which he imparted to me. The penance lasted for six months during which various goblins tried to foil my penance by all possible means. But I stood the test and at the end of six months, a beautifully shining goddess appeared before me, praying to me that the mystic powers were at my command. I asked them to serve Anangarati. But they declined it and added that they could serve only him who masters the mystic sciences with undaunted courage. She further confided to me that Anangarati had only played a trick with me in that he wanted me to master the mystic sciences on the express advice of Sakyabuddhi, the Prime Minister of the Vidyadhara King Vikramabahu of the Gaganavallabha city, as the king had become detached to worldly

238 pleasures. So, she advised, I should not mind my promise to Anangarati. And she disappeared. At this moment there arose the loud music of jubilant vidyadharas who took me to their city and crowned me their king.
