Part 1.3d - ī Rasa (The Heroic Sentiment)

The ī rasa or heroic sentiment relates to the superior type of persons and has ܳٲ or energy as its basis. This is created by or determinants such as presence of mind, perseverance, diplomacy, discipline, military strength, aggressiveness, reputation of might, influence . Գܲ屹 of this rasa are firmness, patience, heroism, charity, diplomacy etc and contentment, judgement, pride, agitation, energy, ferocity, indignation, remembrance, horripilation are its ⲹ󾱳屹.[1]

In the 3rd act of the ī󲹱, 󲹱ūپ spontaneously delineates ī rasa through the gallant deeds of Makaranda where he rescues the very life of Madayantikā from the clutches of the tiger.[2] Again, in the 5th act 󲹱ūپ has delineated ī rasa in the context of 󲹱 and ǰṇṭ where ǰṇṭ has lifted his weapon in order to kill ī but at that very moment 󲹱 appears there and snatches away ī by his fore-arm.Thus, 󲹱 exhibits his heroism by saving the life of ī from the hands of ǰṇṭ.

In the verse ṇa ٲⲹٱ śṅk� 貹Ծ............[3] etc 󲹱 tries to avert the fear of death from ī’s mind by expressing his valour.

Moreover, in the verse 岵岵ٲṛgṛpܱ.....................[4] etc. the expression of extreme cruelty of ǰṇṭ towards 󲹱 is found. ǰṇṭ says that he would cut off the body of 󲹱 by a stroke of his sword as he has fallen in to his clutches who is fond of killing.

In the same manner, by the verse dhairayam nidhehi hṛdaye...................[5] etc 󲹱 expresses his valour to ī. Here, the enemy, ǰṇṭ is the main exciting cause i.e. Բ屹, the action of that enemy is the ܻī貹Բ屹, the valour of 󲹱 is the Գܲ屹, 󲹱’s anger is the ⲹ󾱳屹. Hence, the verse is an example of ī rasa.
