Kohala in the Sanskrit textual tradition (Study)

by Padma Sugavanam | 2011 | 95,782 words

This page relates ‘Introduction of the thesis dealing with Kohala’s contribution to the Sanskrit textual tradition of ancient Indian performing arts. The study focuses specifically on music (Gita), dance (Nritya), and drama (Natya). Although Kohala’s original works have not been found, numerous references to him across Lakshana-Granthas (treatises) and works by modern scholars indicate his significance.

In the previous chapter, the references to Kohala in published works were examined subject-wise. In this chapter, the evidences found are being analysed and an attempt is made to arrive at a picture of Kohala that can be gathered from these. Each of the ṣaṇaԳٳ󲹲 that has referred to Kohala is taken up for study separately to get a macro understanding of what/ which Kohala each of these authors is speaking of. As seen in the previous chapter, several post-ṭyśٰ authors have quoted verses from his works, given his interpretations on subjects or simply mentioned his name as one of the authorities on ṭy. Among the ṣaṇaԳٳ󲹲 where direct quotations or references to Kohala are found, the important ones have been selected to form a part of this study. It is to be noted that, only works with refer to Kohala on aspects of a technical nature have been used here.
