Kohala in the Sanskrit textual tradition (Study)

This page relates ‘Kohala and Nritya (6): The concept of Drishti� of the thesis dealing with Kohala’s contribution to the Sanskrit textual tradition of ancient Indian performing arts. The study focuses specifically on music (Gita), dance (Nritya), and drama (Natya). Although Kohala’s original works have not been found, numerous references to him across Lakshana-Granthas (treatises) and works by modern scholars indicate his significance.
Kohala and Nṛtya (6): The concept of Dṛṣṭi
कि� � विंशति� सत्तवज� भावाद्या अलङ्कारदृष्टयः �
स्तब्धाद्याः सत्तवज� चाष्टौ कोहलोक्ताः पर� अप� � �.६६� �
निरर्थकत्वाद्बाहुल्यभीतेश्� � मयोदिताः �

ʳܰṣoٳٲ Miśrā describes the varieties of glances (ṛṣṭi).
Here, he presents different glances that are to be used for each of the ٳī屹 and states that the same, when used in a more intense manner will generate rasa and thereby will become rasaṛṣṭi:
इत्यष्टौ दृष्टय� स्थयिभावजा लक्षिताः क्रमात� �
एत� एवोल्बणा� सत्य� जायन्त� रसदृष्टय� � �.६२�ityaṣṭau dṛṣṭaya� sthayi屹jā ṣi� kramāt |
etā evolbaṇāḥ satyo jāyante rasadṛṣṭaya� || 3.628—Saṅgistanārāyaṇa: 2009: Vol. II: p.706
ʳܰṣoٳٲ Miśrā also describes the ⲹī-ṛṣṭi. In all he speaks of twenty six types of glances. At this point, he mentions that there are twenty other varieties of ornamental glances (ṅk-ṛṣṭi) born out of the sattva 屹, which have been described by Kohala and also names the first of this list as �ٲ�. The rest of the ṅk-ṛṣṭi of the Kohala ⲹ have not been mentioned by the author who cites the reason that it is futile/ meaningless and superfluous to do so. Perhaps at the time of Puruśottama Miśrā, these ornamental glances had gone out of vogue due to which he has omitted a description of them. He says that he has only described those that have been followed by the ū峦ⲹ.
Interestingly, the ṛṣṭi called ٲ occurs in 屹śԲ, where it has been described as one among the twelve glances that are used to express the raudra rasa:
निष्पन्दमानपक्ष्माग्रताराभ्र� स्तम्भमुच्यत� �
niṣpandamānapakṣmāgratārābhru stambhamucyate |

There is no description of a ṛṣṭi called ٲ in works like ṛtⲹ and ṅgīٲᲹ (ṛtⲹٲԲś) or still later works like Բⲹ岹貹ṇa of Ի徱ś.
