Historical Elements in the Matsya Purana

This page relates ‘Lineages of Vasishtha� of the study on the historical elements of the Matsya-purana: one of the eighteen Mahapuranas which are Sanskrit texts that have preserved the cultural heritage, philosophy, religion, geography, etc of ancient India. This Matsyapurana was originally written in 20,000 verses and deals with topics such as architecture, ancient history, polity, religion and philosophy.

Lineages of ղṣṭ
The Pravara of ղṣṭ Gotra was the only Vasistha. They did not marry each other. ղ岵岹, Oupagava, Vaiklava, Ś屹ⲹԲ, 辱ṣṭ, Oupaloma, Alabdha, Śatha, Katha, ҲܱⲹԲ, Bodhapa, 첹ⲹ, ⲹ첹, Bāliśay, śⲹ, Vāggranthi, Ā貹ٳūṇa, Śītavṛtta, ܰⲹ첹, Lobhāyana, Svstikara, Śṇḍ, Goudini, Vādohali, ܳ, Upavṛddhi, Couli, Bouli, Brahmabala, Pouli, Ś, Pauṇḍava and Yajñavalkya these sages were in same gotra Pravara . ղṣṭ was their Pravara and they did not inter marriage.
Ś, Ѳ첹ṇa, Koukhya, Krodhina, Kapinjala, ⲹ, 岵ٳⲹԲ, ܱⲹԲ, Kālaśikha, ǰṛṣṇa, Surāyana, Sakāharya, Śākadhī, ṇv, Upalapa, ŚⲹԲ, Uhāka, ṣaś屹ⲹ, ⲹԲ, ⲹ, 첹ⲹ, Gorat, ⲹԲ, Śyāmavaya, Krododarāyaṇa, Pralambāyan, Oupamanyu, Sānkhyāyana, Vedaśeraka, Pālankāyana, 岵, Balekṣu, ٱⲹ, Brahmamalī and ʲԲԲ of all these sages the three sages were called Pravara named ī, ղṣṭ and Indrapramādi. Among them, Intermarriage was prohibited.
Oupasthala, Asvasthalaya, , , Hala, Madhyandina, ṣaٲⲹ, Paippalādi, Vicukṣaṣa, Traiśṛngāyaṇa, Saibalka, and ṇḍԲ all these sages were in the ղṣṭ, Mitravaruṇa and ṇḍԲ pravara. Բⲹ, Mahāvirya, 岵ⲹ, Parama, Ā, Vāyana and Cakroda–among these sages were prohibited to marry each other. Ś첹ṇa, Vaya and 岹貹 wer belong to the pravara of ٳܰ첹ṇa, ղṣṭ and Atri. They also did not marry each other.[1]
