Historical Elements in the Matsya Purana

This page relates ‘Lineages of Parashara� of the study on the historical elements of the Matsya-purana: one of the eighteen Mahapuranas which are Sanskrit texts that have preserved the cultural heritage, philosophy, religion, geography, etc of ancient India. This Matsyapurana was originally written in 20,000 verses and deals with topics such as architecture, ancient history, polity, religion and philosophy.

Lineages of ʲś
Ṛṣ ղṣṭ and Agastya were born as the son of Mitra and Varauṇa. ղṣṭ received beautiful ܲԻī as his wife. ܲԻī gave birth to a son named Śپ. Śپ’s son was ʲś. Lord վṣṇ was born as the son of ʲś. He was famous as ٱⲹԲ.
ṇḍśⲹ, Բ貹, Jaihmapa, ܳ貹Բ and ҴDZ–these five sages were known as Goura ʲś. Prapohaya, ⲹⲹ, Khāteya, Kautujāti and Haryasvi–these five sages known as ī ʲś. ṣṇⲹԲ, Kapimukha, ⲹٳ, Japati and ʳṣk–these sages were famous as ṛṣṇa ʲś. Ś屹ṣṭⲹԲ, ⲹ, Svāyaṣṭa, Upaya and Iṣīkahasta–these five sages were known as Śٲ ʲś. پ첹, 岹, Stamba, Krodhanāyaan and Kṣemi–these five sages were known as Ś峾 ʲś. ⲹԲ, Vārṣṇāyana, Taileya, ūٳ貹 and Tanti–these five sages were famous as the ٳū ʲś. All the above sages were belonging to the Pravara of ʲś, Śپ and ղṣṭ. They were prohibited to intermarry.[1]
