Preface
The best contribution of India to the mankind is the Sanskrit language and its vast literature. In Odisha, research work in Sanskrit and Indology was started especially in the postindependence days. Gitagovinda is a Sanskrit Kavya poem of 12th century composed by the well known poet Jayadeva, who was a devotee of Lord Krsna/Jagannatha. The popularity of this immortal work can be judged by its more than 130 imitations and its deep influence in the field of art and culture. Several studies were made regarding this poem and many commentaries had been written on this small but beautiful lyrical text. Besides about 180 editions of Gitagovinda along with translations in all regional languages, more than 1500 unpublished manuscripts are still available in different museums in India and abroad and in libraries as well as individual collectons. Another blessed poet of Odisha was Baladeva Ratha who was honoured by the king Ramacandra Chotaray, with the title of Kavisurya or the "Sun among the poets", which was also accepted by the king of Odisha Gajapati Mukunda Deva. Kavisurya belongs to 18th century and after 600 years Jayadeva's influence was found in the bilingual compositions of Kavisurya Baladeva Ratha, entitled Kisoracandranandacampu. As a resident of Odisha I have tried to compare two renowned poets of this state. Their time, personal life, royal patronage, i
devotion, poetic-compositions, legends etc. which are compiled and compared in this research work. Both of the poets were musicians and experts in the art of song. Now-a-days the songs of Gitagovinda and Kisoracandranandacampu are regarded as the performance of higher class students of Odishi dance and music. Justification of the comparative study of Jayadeva's Gitagovinda and Kishore-chandrananda-champu of Kavisurya Baladeva - 1. Jayadeva's Gitagovinda was composed on the love episode of Radha and Krsna which had formed the part of ancient texts like the Brahmavaivartapurana, the Padmapurana etc. However, the Bhagavatapurana does not deal the character of Radha but there is a veiled reference to one most fortunate. Gopi to whom Krsna had carried to a secret distance in front of the other gopis in the Rasapancadhyayi. This episode can be alluded Krsna's specific attraction towards Radha which has not been articulately expressed by the author of the Bhagavata. (Srimad Bhagavatamahapuranam, X.28-38) The author of the Gitagovinda being a follower of the Nimbarka school of Vedanta philosophy was more bold to declare the name of Radha as the partner of Krsna in the amorous daliences of his theme who represented the Jivatma and Krsna played the role of Paramatma under veil. The entire theme has been taken up by Kavisurya with slight differences for the building of the theme of the Kishore-chandrananda-champu ii
!!! 2. The amazing popularity of Gitagovinda has influenced the Odishan author Kavisurya to avail more popularity by such a composition which will draw the attention and appreciation of the learned Sanskrit scholars and the music lovers of Odisha, at the same time by a single composition containing Sanskrit verses, prose passages (popularly called Curnakas) and songs in Odia language which can excel the popularity of the songs of Gitagovinda Virtual, Kavisurya had achieved that goal when the popularity of Kishore-chandrananda-champu is judged. This has impelled me to take up the topic of comparison between Jayadeva's Gitagovinda and Kishore-chandrananda-champu of Kavisurya. So in my view the theme and the style of both the poets are quite similar to form a topic for a viable comparative study. : Thus literary and musical comparison of both the poems are the field of research attempted in this work. The chapters are designed as fallows. The Introduction section contains briefly, the life and works of both the poets. Chapter-1 presents the background and plot of Jayadeva's Gitagovinda along with the establishment of Vaisnavism in brief and the characters of the poem. Chapter-II contains the critical and musical study of the Gitagovinda. It explains the literary merits and defines the musical tunes.
: Chapter-III shows the background and plot content of Kisoracandranandacampu with a brief note on the tradition of Vaisnavism in Odisha and the narration of campu and its characters. Chapter-IV provides the critical and musical estimate of Kisoracandranandacampu. It estimates the poetic talent and the linguistic skill of the poet. Chapter-V deals with the comparative analysis of literary merits of both the poems. It shows the stylistic, linguistic and rhetorical comparison of the two works. Chapter-VI presents the comparative analysis of musical potentials of both the works. Chapter-VII contains the influence of both the poems in the field of art and the conclusion. For providing assistance to the readers of the non-Sanskrit knowing category, the Glossary of technical terms along with their meanings has been given separately towards the end of the thesis which is followed by the Appendices which contain the basic texts of Kisoracandranandacampu, and another Sanskrit compositions of Baladeva Ratha. The Bibliography consists of the names of the works consulted with their corresponding authors or editor(s) and the year of publications and the name of the publishing agencies as well. iv
