The accomplishment of good friendship is the second fact that can make social welfare developed. According to the guidance of the Buddha, it is to be fulfilled for the development of social welfare. It is pointed out as the second cause of development in worldly or secular life by the Buddha.

The utterance of the Buddha can be seen in Vyagghapajja Sutta or D墨ghaj膩峁噓 Sutta of A峁単uttara Nik膩ya as the following:鈥�

鈥�Katam膩 ca, vyagghapajja, kaly膩nmittat膩? Idha, vyagghapajja, kulaputto yasma峁� g膩me 惫腻 nigame 惫腻 辫补峁璱惫补蝉补迟颈, tattha yete honti鈥�-ghapat墨 惫腻 gahapatiputt膩 惫腻 诲补丑补谤腻 惫腻 vuddhas墨lino vuddh膩 惫腻 vuddhas墨lino, 蝉补诲诲丑腻sampann膩, 蝉墨濒补蝉补尘辫补苍苍腻, 肠腻驳补蝉补尘辫补苍苍腻, 辫补帽帽腻蝉补尘辫补苍苍腻鈥�-迟别丑颈 蝉补诲诲丑颈峁� 蝉补苍迟颈峁�峁�丑补迟颈 sallapati 蝉腻办补肠肠丑补峁� 蝉补尘腻辫补箩箩补迟颈; yath膩r奴p膩na峁� 蝉补诲诲丑腻sampann膩na峁� 蝉补诲诲丑腻sampada峁� anusikkhati, yath膩r奴p膩na峁� 蝉墨濒补蝉补尘辫补苍苍腻na峁� 蝉墨濒补sampada峁� anusikkhati, yath膩r奴p膩na峁� 肠腻驳补蝉补尘辫补苍苍腻na峁� 肠腻驳补sampada峁� anusikkhati, yath膩r奴p膩na峁� 辫补帽帽腻sampann膩na峁� pa帽帽ampada峁� anusikkhati.鈥�

鈥淲hat is good friendship? Herein, Vyagghapajja, in whatsoever village or market town a householder dwells, he associates, converses, engages in discussions with householders or householders鈥� sons whether young and highly cultured or old and highly cultured, full of faith (蝉补诲诲丑腻), full of virtue (蝉墨濒补), full of charity (肠腻驳补), full of wisdom (辫补帽帽腻). He acts in accordance with the faith of the faithful, with the virtue of the virtuous, with the charity of the charitable, with the wisdom of the wise. This is called good friendship.鈥�^[1]

In the discourse mentioned above, we can see the four general characteristics and other prestigious quality of a good friend that is the major character in the relationship of friends. They are:-

(1) 厂补诲丑腻: faith; confidence;
(2) 厂墨濒补: morality; virtue; moral ethic;
(3) 颁腻驳补: charity; generosity; alms-giving;
(4) 笔补帽帽腻: knowledge; wisdom; insight-knowledge;
(5) Having highly cultured;
(6) Associating or engaging with a person who is highly cultured.

These are the common characteristics of a good friend and they are essentially needed for oneself and others. It is needed to be fulfilled to be accomplished with a good friendship.

It is essential not only for the development of welfare but also for anyone in order to live peacefully and harmoniously in the community.
