Essay name: Tilakamanjari of Dhanapala (study)

This is an English study of the Tilakamanjari of Dhanapala, a Sanskrit poem written in the 11th century. Technically, the Tilaka-manjari is classified as a Gadyakavya (鈥減rose-romance鈥�). The author, Dhanapala was a court poet to the Paramara king Munja, who ruled the Kingdom of Malwa in ancient west-central India.

bear similarity to the B膩l膩ru峁嘺 ring in the TM. The refe-
46 rence to a festival of Hari on Ratnak奴ta might have inspi-
red Dhanap膩la for a similar one on the Pa帽casaila island.
And lastly the names of some of the characters like
Svayamprabh膩, Citralekh膩, Jvalanaprabha, Madiravati and
Anangarati are also identical.
47 (2) K膩lid膩sa: - The motif of curse is very popular
with K膩lid膩sa who utilizes it in his Raghuva峁僺am, Vikra-
morva艣艂yam, 艢膩kuntalam, Kum膩rasambhavam and Meghad奴tam.In
the first two of these, the curse serves to transform the

victim into an elephant and a creeper respectively. The
idea of keeping, in a penance-grove of a seer, a damsel
in distress is appealingly depicted in the seventh Act
of S膧K where Sakuntal膩 is shown to be living in the her-
mitage of M膩rica. The use of incorporeal speech (膩k膩艣a-
SZE鈻爖 -bhav膩 sarasvati) prevents Rati from committing
