This is an English study of the Tilakamanjari of Dhanapala, a Sanskrit poem written in the 11th century. Technically, the Tilaka-manjari is classified as a Gadyakavya (鈥減rose-romance鈥�). The author, Dhanapala was a court poet to the Paramara king Munja, who ruled the Kingdom of Malwa in ancient west-central India.

(iv) Jayantasvami is referred to by Mahar峁 in his
discourse. He is an omniscient saint lodged in the "Pu峁�-
kar膩vati" heaven on the celestial plane. It is this
Jayantasv膩m墨 who assures Priyangusundari and Prya峁僾ad膩,
the deserted divine beloveds of Jvalanaprabha and Sum膩l墨
respectively, that they will be united with their lovers
and will regain their special divine faculties when they
obtain divine ornaments. This prophesy serves a dual
purpose: (a) It is responsible for the temporary disillu-
sionment of Tilakama帽jar墨 who remembers her past birth
at the sight of the Candr膩tapa necklace and sends cold
message to Hariv膩hana, who consequently is heart-broken
and resolves to commit suicide by throwing himself down

the precipice called Samh膩ra: /It is indirectly instrumen-
tal to the attainment of the divine powers and the conse-
quent Vidy膩dharahood by Hariv膩hana through the agency of
the magic illusion conjured up by Anangarati. The faith
int this unfailing prediction helps Priyangusundari who
has to suffer not much, while the scepticism with regard
to its fulfilment on the part of Priyamvad膩 subjects her,
in the next birth as Malayasundari, to unbearable 鈻犘�
