8. Navagraha Temple (in Puri)
The Navagraha temple is situated on the inner enclosure of the northwestern side of the Jagannatha temple complex. The temple exactly located to the north of natamandapa of the Laksmi temple. It is a very small temple and built in sand stones. It faces to east. Art And Architecture of the temple:The temple consists of a single structure of pidha order .Its height is about 25 feet from the surface of the temple complex. This temple is erected on a platform of 4 1/2 feet high. The base of the bada is square of 15 feet on each side. Outer walls of the temple are completely plain. The bada of the deula is surmounted by the pyramidal superstructure and it consists of a single flat shaped pidha. The jhapa simhas are finely projected on the four cardinal directions of the pidha. Dopichha lions are fixed on the top of the kanika pagas of gandi. Garuda figures are inserted in the four cardinal directions of the beki above rahas. The mastaka of the temple consists of beki, ghanta (bell shaped member) above which there is another beki, amalaka sila, khapuri and kalasa. Here the ayudha and dhvaja are completely missing. The sanctum preserves the images of navagrahas as the presiding deities of the temple. Nine planets are worshipped starting from the right to left. On the right, there is Rabi (Sun), then Soma (Moon), Mangala(Mars), Budha (Mercury), Brhaspati (Jupiter), Sukra (Venus), Sani (Saturn), Rahu (ascending node) and Ketu (discending node). All the nine grahas are installed in the western side inner wall niche of the sanctum. All the grahas are carved in separate stone slabs and they are seated in padmasana posture with respective attributes in their hands. There is no separate simhasana for them. Other deities such as Rama, Laxmana, Sita, Hanumana, Samalesvari are also being worshipped in the sanctum of the temple. The temple has two doorways; one on the east (narrow) and another on the south (main doorway). The door jambs of the temple are completely plain. The images of Gaja-Laksmi and navagrahas are completely absent in their respective places of the doorway. Jaya and Vijaya figures are housed in the 321
both sides main doorway wall of the south. Masonry steps are provided for approach towards the sanctum of the temple. The architectural features indicate that the temple might have been constructed in the 16th century AD.
