Part 7 - Socio-economic condition of the folk artists performing in the Devalaya
During the pursuance of the study a host of folk artists, who generally performs in the Billeswar Devalaya Complex are interviewed at their own residences. Their names find mention in the list of interviewed persons annexed with this thesis. The interviews with them and the empirical observation reveal that their economic condition is not good. Most of them belong to below poverty line (BPL). Nevertheless, they like to perform in the Devalaya. In fact they feel honoured amongst the mass people for their performance entertaining the folk people and they attain the identity. They always stay happy with their performances in the Billeswar Devalaya Complex even they do not get exhausted with their life on account of their fanatic attachment with the Billeswar Devalaya. The folk artists belonging to the Billeswar Devalaya have been suffering for penury. But there is no endeavour seen for the promotion of the socio-economic condition by the Devalaya authority. They are paid a meagre honorarium against their performance on the occasion of various festivals held by the Billeswar Devalaya. On 19th April, 2019, I had an opportunity to talk with Shri Bichitra Rajbongshi of Barni who is an Oja-the lead artist of his team. He laments on the means of livelihood. He further, states that folk artists get only prestige from state but not the means of sustenance. My experience gathered during the field works done for my study in this regard got culminated having interacted with the artist at Phooguri village on the occasion of marriage ceremony of Shri Nitul Barman-son of his co-artist-Shri Ramani Barman.
