regarded as Pracya-Samag膩s. In Vis峁噓 Pur膩峁嘺 also Krta is said
a pupil of Hiranyan膩bhin in yoga and codifier of the twenty
four Samhitas of the Samaveda. In the Vayu and the Brahma峁囜笉a
Pur膩峁嘺s also the Pracya Samagas are mentioned. The name of
K峁泃a does not appear in the Vam艣a Br膩hma峁嘺, but the name
occurs in a Paninian S奴tra 啶曕ぞ啶班啶む啷屶啶ぞ啶︵く啶多啶�. [办腻谤迟补办补耻箩补辫腻诲补测补艣肠补. ] The pupils of these
膩c膩ryas are grouped into two, viz. the pracya or eastern S膩magas
and Udicya or northern Samagas.88 From these the S膩ma艣膩kh膩
developed into many.
NUMBER OF THE SAMA VERSES
It is very difficult to fix the exact number of the Samans
since the number varies from one recension to another. According
to the Satapatha Br膩hma峁嘺 S膩ma mantras are equal to letters of
the four thousand B峁沨ati metres. The number of the letters in
one B峁沨ati is 36. Hence according to the Satapatha Br膩hma峁嘺
the Samans are equal to (36x4000) 144000 letters. The Cara峁嘺-
vyuha, attributed to Saunaka gives the number as 1440鈦�0. This
is confirmed by the Vayu" and the Brahm膩峁囜笉a Pur膩nas". The
Atharvana Parisi峁ａ弓a, too, holds the same view 98.
