Shaivacintamani (analytical study)

This page relates ‘Description of Mahakaleshvara Linga� of the English study on the Shaivacintamani—an unstudied text on Shaiva or Shiva worship by Lakshmidhara Mishra, written in the late 17th century and edited for the first time in 1994 by Shri Dukhisyam Pattanaik from the Orissa State Museum. The present research aims to offer a comprehensive study of the Saivacintamani, filling the knowledge gap by being the first to provide in-depth analysis and commentary.

Part 4.3 - Description of Ѳ첹ś ṅg

Ѳ첹ś dzپṅg is a Hindu temple dedicated to Lord Ś and is one of the twelve dzپṅgṃs, shrines which are said to be the most sacred abodes of Lord Ś. This �Ѳ첹ś ṅg� was located at the bank of riverŚ� in the cites of Malava Kingdom. This Ujain was also called as �Գī�.

This Գī was one of 7 greatest devotional places in India. The presiding deity, Lord Ś in the ṅg� form is believed to be Svayambhu, deriving currents of power (Śپ) from within itself as against the other images and ṅgṃs that are ritually established and invested with Գٰ-śپ.

According to the Śǰ첹

ǻ ܰ śī kācchī avantī kā/
ūī dvākhatī caiva saptaite mokṣadāyakā�

This city was very waterful and has much importance according to Skanda mythology. Also in Ś mythology this city was given much importance and was described greatly. The river “Ś� was considered as a holy river and demolishes the sins of devotes who take bath in that river. Also the ś of “Saint Sandhip� where lord Kriṣṇa had his child education was situated at this sipra river bank.

This temple was the capital of king վ徱ٲⲹ’s kingdom and the great poet “Kālidās� was at the court of this Kingdom.

According to epics

Once upon a time these live a Brahmin named “a Veda Priya� who was a great scholar of Vedas. He was Devapriya, Priyamedha, Sukrutha and Suvratha as four sons. All of them are devotes of lord Ś. Once a ṣa named “Dhushana� tried to invade this Avanthi Kingdom. The people are crying and are suffering from this ṣa. But the devotee Veda Priya doesn”t involved and he was in �Ś Dīkṣyā� (the way of worship of lord Ś). Then that Dhushana ordered his soldiers to kill Veda Priya. Then lord Ś appeared there in a flash and killed that Dushana and protected his devotee veda priya and asked his desire. Then veda priya asked lord Ś to be established there so that no other ṣa can dare to invade that kingdom. Then king accepted his request and established himself there as �Ѳ첹ś� and clearing desires of his devotees.

The ruler of Ujjain, king Chandrasena was a great devotee of lord Ś. Once he was in devotion, a small boy of five years named �Śī첹� came there and observed how the king worships lord Ś. Then he decided to worship lord Ś. In the way to his home he lifted a rock and stated worshipping that rock as �Śliṅga�. Mean while his mother called Śī첹 for food but he doesn”t matter words of his mother and he was deeply devoted towards lord Ś. Then his mother removed that rock and thrown away.

Then Śī첹 cried for his favourite god and lost his conscious. Then lord Ś appeared there and become as �dzٳ󾱰ṅg� and established there as a temple. When Śī첹 got his conscious and felt very happy by seeing the temple. Mean while his mother came and was very surprised but also felt very happy. With in very short period this was spread throughout the kingdom.

King Chandrasenā also came to know about this matter and went to that place. He was very surprised on seeing. Śī첹 and Temple. Thus lord Hanuman appeared there and said that “lord Ś was the only god who was very kind and bold. He was the god who was available at the cost of devotion. And also told about Śī첹 that he was very luckiest person as he saw lord Ś with his eyes� and disappeared. On worshipping Śrī Ѳ첹ś ṅg, Vedapriya, Śī첹 and king Chandrasena got places at and settle there by worshipping lord Ś.

History

According to history the traveler Huiansang have explained about this temple in his book. This temple in his book. This Ujjain was the birth place of king Chandragupta who was also called as �Vikramaditya�. Also in the book of �岹ī� of ṇa and also in the books of Kalidasa this Ujjain city was explained.
