Kavyamimamsa of Rajasekhara (Study)

This page relates 鈥楥haracteristics of Varsha-kala (rainy season)鈥� of the English study on the Kavyamimamsa of Rajasekhara: a poetical encyclopedia from the 9th century dealing with the ancient Indian science of poetics and rhetoric (also know as alankara-shastra). The Kavya-mimamsa is written in eighteen chapters representing an educational framework for the poet (kavi) and instructs him in the science of applied poetics for the sake of making literature and poetry (kavya).
Part 8.9 - Characteristics of 痴补谤峁Ｄ�-办腻濒补 (rainy season)
Most of the kavi (poet) indicate that the 痴补谤峁Ｄ�-办腻濒补 or rainy season is the season of love. It is also generally known for the meeting time of birds 叠补濒腻办腻蝉.
Thus in the 惭别驳丑补诲奴迟补 惭补丑腻办补惫颈 碍腻濒颈诲腻蝉补 says:

驰腻测腻惫补谤墨测补 搁腻箩补艣别办丑补谤补 also says that, the clouds in the 痴补谤峁Ｄ�-办腻濒补 (rainy season) induce conception in the 叠补濒腻办腻蝉, growth of new shoots in bamboo plants, settle the dust in the atmosphere and postpone the king鈥檚 intention to travel.

In this season most of the days are rainy and it is very much pleasant time. The whole atmosphere is full of sweets smell and the 艢腻濒补 tree, the plantain tree and Jasmine bring new leave and coconut tree produces new flowers.
The first rain drops on the dry and parched earth makes sweet aroma.

This time the forests appear in blue colour for the coloured leaves of indigo plant.

For the causes of continuous rain the rivers are overflowing and cut through the banks due to their swift current. The Cakora (partridge) brings happiness and stops the preaching of widows and ascetics. They are happy to drink the moon beams. This time separated young wives wait anxiously for the return of their husbands.
The full of day the sky is always resonant with the sounds of clouds and groups of wayfarers are in a hurry to reach their destinations.

It is the best time for young couples for amorous sports. Thus they are arranging their beds at the top floor of mansions. They also use the mixture of sandal, agallochum, saffron and 肠补迟耻岣� 蝉补峁� (a technical term of Rg. Veda or musk) for fragrance. The 颁腻迟补办补 birds are busy for drinking the first drops of rain, the deer鈥檚 are engaged in amorous sports with their mates, peacock begins to dance on seeing the clouds and the amorousness of the young couples separated from each other is aggravated by rain. In this time removes the fatigue of the summer by the fragrance of the flowers of 碍耻峁囜弓补箩补, 狈墨辫补, Arjuna, Kadamba, 碍别迟补办墨 and 狈颈肠耻岣穉 etc.
In this way 搁腻箩补艣别办丑补谤补 gives the general characteristics of 痴补谤峁Ｄ�-峁泃u in his K膩vyam墨m膩峁僺膩 and advices to the poets to highlight this season in their works. In the works of 碍腻濒颈诲腻蝉补s we also saw the description of beauty.
There he describes the clouds heavily laden with water through the expression clouds hanging low with the load water.
