According to Kalyāṇamalla striking is of four types,
he divides the strokes into four kinds.
16 The poet
15 Damodaragupta describes this idea of striking through a
prostitute, who was stating a man thus- "Dragging the
hair is conferring benefits; striking is showing the
favour; biting is delight; hail-prints are prosperity:

embracing tightly is exaltation. He says the breasts,
though they are high are useless if they have not received
18 any strokes from the husband. Vātsyāyana, having narrated
the sex-sport as a love-battle, gives much importance
to the idea of striking.
But the poets, who agreed with
Vātsyāyana, show their keen interest in describing
squeezing, rubbing etc. than striking. Hence we come
across plenty of descriptions of mardana.
15. प्रसुतेनाथ हस्तेन मुष्टिना समपाणिना �
ताडन� स्यात् चतुर्थैव�
� अनंग. [prasutenātha hastena muṣṭinā samapāṇinā |
tāḍana� syāt caturthaiva�
|| anaṃga. ] 10.51.
16. सन्तानितम् - सपताकम� - बिन्दुमालः
[santānitam - sapatākam - bindumāla�
] 17. केशग्रहणमनुग्रहं उपकारस्ताडनं मुदे दंशः �

नखविलयनमभ्युदय� दृढदेहनिपीडन� समुत्कर्षः � कुट्टनी. [nakhavilayanamabhyudayo dṛḍhadehanipīḍana� samutkarṣa� || kuṭṭanī. ] 377.
18. दुर्भर्तृक रास्कानमालिनी क्रियमाणशोभमनुदिवसम् �
तुझ्झामप� पतितकल्प� स्तनशालिनि तत्पयोधरद्वन्द्वम् � कुट्टनी. [durbhartṛka rāskānamālinī kriyamāṇaśobhamanudivasam |
tujhjhāmapi patitakalpa� stanaśālini tatpayodharadvandvam || kuṭṭanī. ] 821.
