Historical Elements in the Matsya Purana

Subject matter of the ʳܰṇa

It is important to know about some general information about the eighteen Ѳܰṇa . In every ʳܰṇa there are mentioned about their short identity. So here describes very short description about the Ѳ-ʳܰṇa .

A. Brahma ʳܰṇa : Brahma ʳܰṇa is one of the important ʳܰṇa among the 18th Ѳ-ʳܰṇa . Brahma ʳܰṇa divided into two parts�Purva and Uttar 岵. There are 14000 verses and 245 chapters in this ʳܰṇa . This text has described the destruction of the foundation of the world.

B. Padma ʳܰṇa : Padma ʳܰṇa , also called the �Ҿ峾ٳⲹ � is one of the major of the eighteenth Ѳܰṇa . It is divided into five parts and 50000 verses. This ʳܰṇa contains the descriptions of the creation.

C. վṣṇ ʳܰṇa : The վṣṇ ʳܰṇa is a religious Hindu text and one of the eighteenth Ѳܰṇa . վṣṇ ʳܰṇa divided into six parts. It has 23000 verses. This text also describes the description of the foundation of the world.

D. ʳܰṇa : The ʳܰṇa , also called the Ś ʳܰṇa (mentioned in many text), is one of the ʳܰṇa , dedicated to god Ś. According to tradition the ʳܰṇa originally consisted of 11000 śǰ첹 (verse) and 4 Khandas which is called ��. After the reconstruction and the abridgment by ձ岹 the extant text comprises 24000 verses, which he taught to his disciple Lomaharshana.

E. 岵vata ʳܰṇa : The 岵vata ʳܰṇa , also known as Śī岵ٲ Ѳʳܰṇa , or Śrīmad 岵vata , is divided into 335 chapters. It has 18000 verses. 岵vata ʳܰṇa describes the many stories of Lord վṣṇ.

F. īⲹ ʳܰṇa : The īⲹ or 岹 ʳܰṇa is one of the major ʳܰṇa among the eighteenth Ѳʳܰṇa . It is divided into two parts and two hundred and seven chapters. It has 25000 verses. ʳܰṇa contains the theory of Ѵǰṣa.

G. 첹ṇḍⲹ ʳܰṇa : The 첹ṇḍⲹ ʳܰṇa is one of the important major ʳܰṇa among the eighteen Ѳܰṇa . It is a genre of Hindu religious text. It has 9000 verses and 137 chapters. It is written in the style of a dialogue between the ancient sage 첹ṇḍⲹ and Jaimini.

H. Agni ʳܰṇa : The Agni ʳܰṇa also a valuable ʳܰṇa among the Ѳʳܰṇa , a genre of Hindu religious text, contains description and details of various incarnation (Avatars) of Lord վṣṇ. It also has details account about, , ṛṣṇa, ṛt󾱱ī and the Stars. The text is divided into 383 chapters. It has 16000 śǰ첹.

G. 󲹱ṣy ʳܰṇa : The 󲹱ṣy ʳܰṇa is a major among the eighteenth Ѳʳܰṇa . It is written in Sanskrit and attributed to Ṛṣi ղ, the compiler of the Vedas. It has 1450 verses. This text contains the various types of worship of Gods.

J. Brahmavaivarta ʳܰṇa : Brahma Vaivarta ʳܰṇa is a major ʳܰṇa . It is a Hindu religious text of the 10th century A.D., divided into four parts. It has 274 chapters and 18000 verses. This text narrates the details of life and deeds of Lord Rādhā-ṛṣṇa.

K. ղ ʳܰṇa : The ղ ʳܰṇa is one of the most important ʳܰṇa among the eighteenth Ѳʳܰṇa . It describes in details about the ղ incarnation (avatar) of վṣṇ, and narrates about the rescue of the ṛt󾱱ī. This text is divided into 218 chapters. It has 24000 verses.

L. ṅg ʳܰṇa : The ṅg ʳܰṇa is one of the main ʳܰṇa of Hindu religious text about Lord Ś. The extant text is divided into two parts and 133 chapters respectively. In this ʳܰṇa , Lord Ś directly tells sometimes the importance of worship of ṅg and the correct rituals to be followed during the worship of the ṅg. It has 11000 verses.

M. Skanda ʳܰṇa : The Skanda ʳܰṇa is the largest ʳܰṇa. Skanda is the son of Lord Ś, also known as پⲹ. This text has 81000 slokas. It described about Lord Ś.

N. 峾Բ ʳܰṇa : The 峾Բ ʳܰṇa is one of the most important Ѳܰṇa . This Hindu religious text is devoted to the 峾Բ avatar of Lord վṣṇ. This text is divided into ninety-five chapters, and it has 10000 verses.

O. Matsya ʳܰṇa : Matsya ʳܰṇa is one of the oldest among the eighteen Ѳ-ʳܰṇa , post-Vedic Hindu scriptures. It narrates the story of Matsya, the first of ten major avatars of the Hindu god վṣṇ. This text has 291 chapters and 15000 verses.

P. Ҳḍa ʳܰṇa : The Ҳḍa ʳܰṇa is one of the eighteen Ѳ-ʳܰṇa , which are part of the Hindu body of texts known as ṛt. It has 18000 śǰ첹. This is divided into 264 chapters. There is the description of making world in this ʳܰṇa .

Q. ṇḍ ʳܰṇa : The ṇḍ ʳܰṇa is one of the eighteen Ѳ-ʳܰṇa , a genre of eighteen Hindu religious texts and has been assigned the eighteenth place in almost all the lists of the ʳܰṇa . In Sanskrit ‘Brahma� means biggest or the Universe and �Anda� or ‘Andam� means egg. So ṇḍ means the biggest egg signifying the life from which universe is born. It has two parts and 12000 verses.

R. ū ʳܰṇa : The ū ʳܰṇa is one of the eighteen Ѳܰṇa , a genre of Hindu religious texts. It is believed to have been directly narrated by the Lord վṣṇ to the sage 岹, and it contains the details about the ū avatar. This text is divided into four ṃh . It has 6000 śǰ첹. But according to the 岵vata and Matsya ʳܰṇa it has 18000 verses.
