This page relates ‘Examples of Parakiya Virahotkanthita� of the study dealing with the Ashta-Nayikas—a classification of eight kinds of “Heroines� representing the eight emotional states (avastha) employed in the classical Indian dance and performing arts (otherwise known as Natya Shastra). These Ashtanayikas reflect the eight types of romantic relationships and have hence formed the expressive subject of many classical painting, poems and dramatic plays.

Examples of the ʲī variety of the վdzٰ첹ṇṭ character of woman heroine:
स्नातं वारिदवारिभिर्विरचितो वासो घन� कानन� शीतैश्चन्दनविन्दुभिर्मनसिज� देवः समाराधित� �
नीता जागरणव्रते� रजनी व्रीडा कृता दक्षिण� तप्त� कि� � तपस्तथाप� � कथ� नायातिनेत्रातिथि� �snāta� vāridavāribhirviracito vāso ghane kānane śītaiścandanavindubhirmanasijo deva� samārādhita� |
nītā jāgaraṇavratena rajanī vrīḍ� kṛtā dakṣiṇ� tapta� ki� na tapastathāpi sa katha� nāyātinetrātithi� ||[1]I have drenched myself in rain, dwelt in the dense forest, offered prayers to the cupid with sandal paste, spent a sleepless night and offered my bashfulness. What penance have I not done, that my lover has not gratified my eyes with his presence yet? [Her wait is obvious. As, she is a ʲī, she is waiting for him at a tryst]
एहिसितुमंत� णिमिसम्ब जग्गिअ जामिणी� पढमद्धम् �
सेसं सन्तावपरव्वसाइ वरिसंव चोल्लीणम� �
छाया�
एष्यसि त्वमित� निमिषमिव जागरित� यामिन्या� प्रथमार्धम� �
शेषं सन्तापपरवशया वर्षमि� चोन्नीतम� �ehisitumaṃti ṇimisamba jaggia jāmiṇīa paḍhamaddham |
sesa� santāvaparavvasāi varisaṃva collīṇam ||

eṣyasi tvamiti nimiṣamiva jāgarita� yāminyā� prathamārdham |
śeṣa� santāpaparavaśayā varṣamiva connītam ||[2]Expecting only you, the first half of the nights is spent in wakefulness like a moment. As she is under somebody else’s control, the rest feels like a year of suffering.
