gr膩ma峁� gr膩ma艣at膩dhyak峁岣� sahasr膩dhipati岣� puram || 119 ||The Lord of Ten villages shall enjoy one Kula and the Lord of Twenty villages twenty Kulas; the Lord of Hundred villages one whole village and the Lord of Thousand villages one town.鈥�(119)
Medh膩tithi鈥檚 commentary (manubh膩峁a):
鈥�顿补艣颈鈥� is the person in charge of Ten villages; so 鈥�痴颈峁兣沬鈥� also. The forms of the words are Vedic.
鈥�Kula鈥欌�攑art of a village; known in some places as 鈥�丑补峁弓补鈥� and in others as 鈥�耻峁ａ弓补鈥�.
Five times this land appertains to the Lord of Ten villages; and an entire village to the Lord of Hundred villages; and the 鈥�Town鈥欌�攃ity, to the Lord of a Thousand villages. The system is that the living should be determined in accordance with the position and duties of the officers.鈥�(119)
Explanatory notes by Ganganath Jha
鈥�Kulam鈥欌�斺�楢 portion of the village, known in some places as g丑补峁弓补, and in others as 鈥�耻峁ａ弓补鈥�;鈥斺�榓s much land as can be cultivated with two ploughs鈥� (Kull奴ka);鈥斺�榓s much as is cultivated by one cultivator鈥� (Nandana).
This verse is quoted in 痴墨谤补尘颈迟谤辞诲补测补 (R膩jan墨ti, p. 251), which adds the following notes:鈥斺��Kulam鈥� is a portion of the village, called 鈥�辫腻诲耻办腻,鈥� says Kalpataru:鈥攐thers however hold that it stands for as much land as can be cultivated by two ploughs. That much of land he should have for his livelihood.
