Description of the photo

[Category: Rishish—The Hermits]

Pharathavad (Bharadvaja): He was one of the four Rishis who performed the Khao Thip (Divine Rice) ceremony in Ayuthaya, He practiced penance on the bank of Satong river. When Phra Ram was wandering in the forest he crossed the river to meet the Rishis whose names were Vaccha-akkhi, Vasit, (Vasishtha), Svamit (Visvamitra). King Thotsarot invited them to join Kalaikot Rishi in Asavameth ceremony in Ayuthaya for begetting son/sons, Putesti [Putresti?]. While the ceremony was on, a being came out of the sacrificial pit with a tray of divine rice balls. Just that time a crow demon, Kakanasun (Kakanasura) snatched away half of a ball and flew to Montho who had been fascinated by the sweet smell of the balls and had requested Thotsakan to have them for her. This work was assigned to Kakanasun.

The images depict the main characters from the Ramakien, Thailand's national epic representing the Siamese / Thai version of the Ramayana. They are taken from Professor Satya Vrat Shastri’s book “Ramayana in Southeast Asiaâ€. These images depict in detail the complexions, facial expressions, head-gears, number of arms and heads and the postures, evidence par excellence as how Thai Muse had conceived them. The Ramakien does not necessarily follow the Valmiki Ramayana in the delineation of the episodes
