They are divided into four basic schools and eighteen sects.
- the lineage from the preceptor-Arhat Kāśyapa, the Mahāsāṃghika school;
- the lineage from Rāhula, the Sarvāstivāda;
- the lineage from Kātyāyana, the Sthavira school; and
- the lineage from Upāli, the Saṃmatīya school.
The sub-divisions make up the the Eighteen Sects; according to master Vinītadeva (eighth century).
The five Mahāsāṃghika sects are:
- ūś,
- 貹ś,
- Haimavata;
- ǰdzٳٲ岹;
- ʰñپ岹;
The seven Sarvāstivādin sects are:
- ūپ岹;
- śⲹīⲹ;
- Ѳīś첹;
- Dharmaguptaka;
- śܳīⲹ;
- 峾śṭīy;
- վⲹ岹.
The Sthavira sects are:
- ٲīⲹ;
- ⲹīⲹ;
- Ѳ屹īⲹ;
The three Saṃmatīya sects are:
- Kurukullaka;
- Avantaka;
- ٲīٰܳīⲹ;

Tibetan Buddhism includes schools such as Nyingma, Kadampa, Kagyu and Gelug. Their primary canon of literature is divided in two broad categories: The Kangyur, which consists of Buddha’s words, and the Tengyur, which includes commentaries from various sources. Esotericism and tantra techniques (Բ) are collected indepently.
