Vyakarana (Sanskrit grammar)
: Wikisource: A dictionary of Sanskrit grammarDvanddha (द्वन्द्ध).—Name of a compound, formed of two or more words used in the same case, showing their collection together; cf. चार्थे द्वन्द्व (cārthe dvandva) P. II.2.29. Out of the four meanings of the indeclinable (ca), viz. समुच्च अन्वाच, इतरेतरयो (samuccaya anvācaya, itaretarayoga) and समाहार (), the dvandva compound is sanctioned in the last two senses only called इतरेतरद्वन्द्व (itaretaradvandva) (as in प्लक्षन्यग्रोध (ṣaԲⲹǻ) etc.) and समाहारद्वन्द्व (dvandva) (as in वाक्त्वचम् (ٱ) etc.) respectively For details see Mahabhasya on II.2.29. The dvandva compound takes place only when the speaker intends mentioning the several objects together i.e. when there is, in short, सहविवक्ष (ṣ) orयुगपदध-करणवचनता (ܲ貹岹-첹ṇaԲ); cf. अनुस्यूतेव मेदाभ्या एक प्रख्योपजायत यस्यां सहविवक्षां तामाहुर्द्वन्द्व-कशेषयो (anusyūteva medābhyā ekā prakhyopajāyate | yasyā ṣāṃ tāmāhurdvandvai-kaśeṣayo |) Sr. Pr. II. The gender of a word in the द्वन्द्वसमास (屹Ի屹) is that of the last word in the case of the इतरे-रद्वन्द् (itareta-radvandva), while it is the neuter gender in the case of the समाहारद्वन्द्व (dvandva).

Vyakarana (व्याकर, vyākaraṇa) refers to Sanskrit grammar and represents one of the six additional sciences (vedanga) to be studied along with the Vedas. Vyakarana concerns itself with the rules of Sanskrit grammar and linguistic analysis in order to establish the correct context of words and sentences.
