The Purana (啶啶班ぞ啶�, pur膩峁嘺s) refers to Sanskrit literature preserving ancient India鈥檚 vast cultural history, including historical legends, religious ceremonies, various arts and sciences. The eighteen mahapuranas total over 400,000 shlokas (metrical couplets) and date to at least several centuries BCE.

The brahma-vrata differs from all the other vows in its double formulation: positive in the sense of 鈥渃ontentment with one鈥檚 own wife鈥� (蝉惫补-诲腻谤补-蝉补苍迟辞峁) and negative as 鈥渁voidance of the wives of others鈥� (补-辫补谤补-诲腻谤补-驳补尘补苍补). In the former case the translation 鈥渨ife鈥� rather than 鈥渨ives鈥� or 鈥渨omen鈥� has been chosen deliberately for reasons that will be apparent later, though in fact the issue of monogamy or polygamy continues to be debated in the texts, despite a social context in which polygamy is the natural prerogative of the well-to-do. Some authorities hold that of the five 补迟颈肠腻谤补蝉 listed below only the last three can be said to transgress this vow in its negative formulation.

- love-play (补苍补峁単补-办谤墨岣嵞�);

- excessive predilection for the pleasures of the senses (办腻尘补-产丑辞驳补-迟墨惫谤腻产丑颈濒腻峁).
