This is an English study of the Tilakamanjari of Dhanapala, a Sanskrit poem written in the 11th century. Technically, the Tilaka-manjari is classified as a Gadyakavya (“prose-romance�). The author, Dhanapala was a court poet to the Paramara king Munja, who ruled the Kingdom of Malwa in ancient west-central India.

Jain ascetics, partcularly the Svetambaras, could freely
move in the cities like Ayodhya and Kanci, and distingui-
shed saints like the Vidyadhara Muni had access to the
15 kings also. There is an oblique reference to the Digam-
baras, though the obvious reference is to a bard reciting
a panegyric verse.
16 (2) YOGA AND TANTRIC MYSTICISM :-
Yoga and Tantric mysticism were the common integral
aspects of the personal spiritual life of those days, irre-
pective of all the varied sectarian schisms and ideelogical
differences among various faiths like Saivism, Vaiṣṇavism,
Buddhism or Jainism.

Vidyadhara Muni instantly resorts to Yoganidrā in order
