This is an English study of the Tilakamanjari of Dhanapala, a Sanskrit poem written in the 11th century. Technically, the Tilaka-manjari is classified as a Gadyakavya (“prose-romance�). The author, Dhanapala was a court poet to the Paramara king Munja, who ruled the Kingdom of Malwa in ancient west-central India.

The Vaisnavas were certainly devoted to Kṛṣṇa-worship
but they seem to have had a very hard time in that Dhanapāla
has slyly referred to their being subjected to firy perse-
cution. This is not impossible in view of the fact recor-
ded by none else than a Jain chronicler like Prabhācandra
in his PRC, that even at the hands of such a venerated sta-
unch Jain teacher like Haribhadrasuri a defeated Buddhist
disputant named Surapala was compelled to burn himself alive
in a caldron of boiling oil as per the stipulation of the
12 scholastic debate.
The Buddhists, particularly the Nihilists, were ra-
ther rarely met with and they seem to have been a morally
degenerated sect with theie nuns swarming at the royal
harems, serving as petty go-betweens in the love-affairs
of princes, and at times found to be more reckless than
13 even the ordinary youths.
The Jains seem to have been rather aggressive in their
onslaughts against the rival faiths during their religious
