This is an English study of the Tilakamanjari of Dhanapala, a Sanskrit poem written in the 11th century. Technically, the Tilaka-manjari is classified as a Gadyakavya (鈥減rose-romance鈥�). The author, Dhanapala was a court poet to the Paramara king Munja, who ruled the Kingdom of Malwa in ancient west-central India.

(3) ORNAMENTS OF MEN 563 The royal ornament of the head was Kiri峁璦 or Muku峁璦.
Thus, the Vidy膩dhara kings are said to have worn crowns on
their heads. Such crowns were made of gold and numerous
jewels were studded in them, and the had fillets of gold

to properly fit them to different/heads. But the usual
decoration of the head consisted of tying the hair on the
head in the form of a vertical braid and wearing a chaplet
of various fragments flowers, such as Mallik膩, M膩lat墨, San-
t膩naka, Nameru, Mand膩ra, etc.. Such braids and chaplets
are mentioned in the descriptions of Hariv膩hana, Samarake-
349 tu, T盲raka and the vidy膩dhara kings.
