This is an English study of the Tilakamanjari of Dhanapala, a Sanskrit poem written in the 11th century. Technically, the Tilaka-manjari is classified as a Gadyakavya (“prose-romance�). The author, Dhanapala was a court poet to the Paramara king Munja, who ruled the Kingdom of Malwa in ancient west-central India.

to suggest an oblique compliment to Jinasena also ?
GuṇÄdhya's date is generally believed to fall by about
78 A.D. during the regime of Satavahana. But the tradi-
23 tion preserved in both the KSS and the BKM regards
Gunadhya as a contemporary of PÄṇini and Vararuci alias
KÄtyÄyana the grammarian. The Puranic tradition regards
him as a contemporary og HÄla, the son of Ariṣṭa Satakarṇi
who ruled between the years 2644-2649 of the Yudhisthira

Era,
i.e. 495-490 B.C. Dhanapala seems to have kept this
in mind in mentioning the BrhatkathÄ just after RÄmÄyaṇa
and the MahÄbhÄrata.
