Waist Ornaments (Introduction)
Of the ornaments that adore the waist, two kinds are seen:
- Kati-sutra or waist-band
- Mekhala or girdle
Of these two the kati-sutra has both ornamental and functional purpose, with the main stress on the latter, as it is tied around the waist as a means of fastening the lower garment. The mekhala or girdle serves the purpose of ornamentation alone. A kati-sutra is normally seen worn at the hip region, supporting the lower garment and a mekhala is seen as an ornamental accessory below the kati-sutra.
