2.4. Cārī (delicate movements of limbs)

According to the վṣṇܻ󲹰dzٳٲܰṇa, ī is nothing but the delicate movements of limbs[1] . The ṭyśٰ also states that ī is the simultaneous movement of feet, shanks and hip.[2]

Moreover, the ṭyśٰ gives another definition of ī

“The extension of single foot at one time is called as ī.[3]

It makes a dance performance more elegant and attractive. On the other hand when the movements are forceful, then these are called as mahāī.[4] The վṣṇܻ󲹰dzٳٲܰṇa does not talk about the types of ī. But according to the ṭyśٰ, there are thirty two kinds of earthly īs and sixteen kinds of aerial īs.[5] Again the 󾱲Բⲹ岹貹ṇa accepts eight klinds of ī.[6] The names and definitions of īs in both of these works are totally different and do not have any similarity.
