Introduction to the ñⲹ Śṣ
The ñⲹ Śṣ is the most complete among the Śṣās of the Śܰⲹܰ岹. It had previously been connected with ñⲹ, presumably the founder of the ᲹԱī School[1].
His name had been mentioned three times in the main part of the text. For example
varṇo jātiśca mātrā ca gotra chandaśca daivatam|
etatsarva samākhyāta yājñavalkyena dhīmatā||(ñⲹ Śṣ, 18)
yuktiyukta vaco grāhya na grāhyaṅgurugauravāt|
sarvaśāstrarahasya tad yājñavalkyena bhāṣitam||(ñⲹ Śṣ,6)
iti śrīyogivarayājñavalkyamaharṣiproktā yājñavalkyaśikṣ sampūrṇā|
(Śṣāsaṃgraha, p. 35)
From this passage, it appears that ñⲹ has not claimed himself as the author of the text in its present form.
But dzś’s opinion on the term “quantity makes us to think second time whether ñⲹ is really the author of this Śṣ or not
nimeṣo mātrākāla syād vidyut kāleti cāpare|
akṣaratulyayogatvānmātiha syāt somaśarmaṇaḥ||(Śṣāsaṃgraha, p.2)
He is a comparatively recent name in this context. There are some modern Hindu views in this work.
Like—the plosives are said to pertain to the God Saturn i.e. śԲśŨ
pañcaviṃśati sparśā kṛṣṇāḥ vyākhyātā śԲśdevatāḥ|
(Śṣāsaṃgraha, p. 32)
His name occurred in the վṣṇܱܰṇa and ʲñٲԳٰ. So his date should not be earlier than the fifth century A.D. But ṭa quoted this Śṣ in his commentary on the ᲹԱī ʰپśⲹŽ:
tathā cokta yājñavalkyena yamān vidyād ayas piṇḍān sāntasthān dārupiṇḍavat Գٲٳ yamavarja tu ūrṇāpiṇḍa vinirdiṣyet
(4.163)
ṭa is said to have worked under the famous king Bhoja[2]. King Ჹ’s date is about 1018 A.D. So the lower limit of this 𝑆 ṣāęs date may be assumed as the tenth century A.D.
